It's been only seven days since the release of Bird Box on Netflix and the film has already reached a record number of subscribers.

Netflix has just confirmed that the post-apocalyptic horror movie has been seen by a jaw-dropping 45 million viewers and counting on its platform!

The streaming company announced the exciting news on Twitter, writing: "Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box - best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!"

The film is based on Josh Malerman's original novel of the same name and stars Sandra Bullock as Malorie, a woman who is on the edge of survival with her two children after a mysterious force kills most of the world's population.

Little is known about the actual force and they must make it through the forest with their eyes covered, in order to avoid the consequences of the supernatural entities.

The rest of the film's cast includes Moonlight's Trevante Rhodes, ABC Murders' John Malkovich, Australian actress Danielle Macdonald, Tom Hollander and many more.

The author's literary agent, Kristin Nelson, has expressed gratitude for the film's current success, writing: "My author @JoshMalerman and I just want to say thank you @NetflixFilm for handling our story with such care. And thank you Sandra and Trevante for bringing Malorie and Tom to life. And because it’s my job, the movie is based on the novel of the same name."

And the record number of viewings matches people's excitement for the film.

Bird Box is now available to watch on Netflix.
