See This Viral Video of 7 Suns in the Sky in China — You’ll Have to See the Phenomenon to Believe It!
Nature is often a mystery to us, as we tend to leave most of our unanswered questions about the way things work to the experts. However, a woman in Chengdu, China, witnessed a phenomenon that’s hard to describe as anything other than breathtaking. In the now viral video, we see the sun alongside six additional suns. Is this a meteorological phenomenon or simply just an optical illusion?

While it’s exciting to think that perhaps this phenomenal sight was the workings of some greater power, experts have debunked such a hypothesis. This exciting imagery was a result of the refraction and scattering of light.
While this exciting occurrence has a logical explanation behind it, that didn’t stop people from sharing their excitement, unique takes, insights and even a few jokes here and there.
“It reminds me of a Chinese myth about how once there were several suns and it was so hot that nothing could grow, until a god used a bow and arrow to shoot down all but one sun,” said one Reddit user.
“I normally see multiple suns when looking through a lens looking through a window looking through a windshield. Multiple panes of glass will do the trick,” said another.
Another user joked, “When earth has astigmatism.”
The science behind the 7 suns
The refraction and scattering of light that we saw demonstrated in this viral video is completely common. Light refraction is when the path of light is changed when it passes through a certain medium — in this instance, layered glass. The multiple “copies” we see of the sun are simply virtual images produced by each layer of glass.
The light bouncing between the layers of glass in the window is essentially what these mirror images boil down to. Should you have gone outside and looked at the sun directly (not something we recommend!), the sun would have looked the way it normally does. That being said, the viral video is less of a “meteorological phenomenon” as the video states, and more of an optical illusion.
