Semi-truck driver intentionally crashes into Kroger in Millington, officials say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A semi-truck driver crashed into Kroger in Millington on purpose Tuesday night, city officials say.

A little before midnight, the Millington Fire Department responded to the Kroger on Highway 51.

The driver, identified as 45-year-old Clarence Carter from Nashville, reportedly entered the store and created a disturbance, officials say. He then left, got in his truck, and intentionally drove through the entrance.

“There’s a lot of insaneness going on here lately everywhere and it’s terrifying,” Kroger shopper Heather Steele said. “Somebody can get angry like that and do something like that, it really is sad.”

MFD says Carter was attempting to leave the scene when officers arrived. He was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody.

“We had to dismantle the truck to get the truck out of the building,” Chief Gary Graves, Public Safety Director of the City of Millington said.

Employees were inside the store, but none of them were injured.

Carter was taken to Regional One for medical evaluation. He is in custody and charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault, Vandalism, and Resisting Arrest.

“Our police department is doing some further investigations (to see) if the truck was stolen,” Graves said. “We’re looking into that because we had reports that a truck may have been stolen out of Memphis, so we’re looking into those aspects of it and looking at what kind of history he may have had also.”

The store was open for business Wednesday with boards now covering the entrance.

Carter is set to be in court on Thursday.
