Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell hospitalized with concussion after fall

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is being treated for a concussion after falling at a hotel in Washington late Wednesday.

The longtime Kentucky lawmaker tripped at a dinner event and was admitted to a hospital, spokesman David Popp told USA TODAY on Thursday.

"He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days of observation and treatment," Popp said.

"The leader is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes."

In 2019, McConnell, 81, who served as majority leader from 2015 to 2021, tripped and fell at his home in Louisville, suffering a shoulder fracture.

"We wish him well and want him to come back soon, so additional information that confirms that he'll be coming back soon and he's doing better would be welcome," said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.

Other lawmakers expressed hopes for a swift recovery, such as Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who said she was "praying for my friend" in a tweet Thursday.

Democratic Sen. Ben Ray Luján, of New Mexico, said McConnell "was one of the first people to reach out to me after my stroke."

"I’m wishing him a full and speedy recovery," he said.
