Strictly Come Dancing star Johannes Radebe's biopic has received an exciting update.

It was announced earlier this year that Johannes was working with producers to adapt his memoir JoJo: Finally Home for the big screen.

According to Deadlime, the project recently took a major step forward when Argo Films came on board to produce alongside Jojo's previously-announced collaborators Arrested Industries and Helena Spring Films.

Argo Films is run by veteran producer Richard Johns, whose credits include Disney+'s The Shepherd with John Travolta. Johns has also worked on the film Shadow of the Vampire, starring Willem Dafoe and John Malkovich.

“Johannes’ story is so full of joy and life that I found the project completely irresistible and therefore couldn’t be more thrilled to work with [producers] Anthony and Helena on bringing this uplifting memoir to the screen,” Johns said in a statement. “They are an incredible pairing, used to working together, but have quickly made me feel welcome as part of the team.”

Johannes’s memoir is the inspiring story of how he used dance to overcome homophobic discrimination during his childhood in the South African township of Zamelda.

"Growing up gay in the townships of South Africa was not an easy ride, but there were so many good things about my life there, and it has made me the person I am today," Radebe said of the project.

"I never imagined my story would end up on the big screen, so I am greatly appreciative of this new opportunity and look forward to working closely with Helena and Anthony over the coming months."

Production on Finally Home (working title) will occur in both the UK and South Africa. Johannes is set to choreograph the film's dance numbers, with casting announcements to follow in due course.

Johannes broke ground on Strictly Come Dancing as part of the show's first male same-sex pairing with John Whaite. The couple finished as runners-up during their season.

The professional dancer will be returning to the ballroom for the new season of Strictly and his celebrity partner will be announced during this weekend's launch show spectacular.

Strictly Come Dancing will return on Saturday, September 14 on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on weeknights on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
