Sweet Magnolias star JoAnna Garcia Swisher has teased fans with an update on the fourth season.

The show follows three lifelong best friends as they manage relationships, family and careers in their quaint town Serenity.

In an interview with People, Garcia Swisher shared why the upcoming instalment of the series is her favourite to date. "I think that it's a function of a lot of things," said the star.

"First and foremost, a lot happens in season 4 — like, jaw-dropping moments.

"I also think that we know our characters so well. We're so involved and in love with these stories, and I think that the fans also have that same sense of connection and being on this journey with us."

The actor, who plays Maddie Townsend, shared that the series will stay true to its roots, but hinted that there would be "really tough, heartbreaking moments" among the "swooping romance and beautiful moments".

"It's got all of the Sweet Magnolias things, but it's just in a package of pedal to the metal," she added. "There's not just one or two things that happen this season. And literally, the first half of the season."

Fans won't be the only one surprised by the chaotic season, as Garcia Swisher revealed she struggled to "catch my breath when I was reading the scripts".

"At the end of every episode I was like, 'What?'" she recalled. But reading the scripts wasn't enough to prepare the actor, as she admitted the filming of season 4 surprised her even more.

"I feel like I was ready for that, in general, just having read the scripts. And then, when it all kind of came to pass and we actually made the show, I was like, 'This is going to be insane.'"

Sweet Magnolias is available now on Netflix.
