Taylor Swift Endorses Kamala Harris, Signs Post ‘Childless Cat Lady’

No less than one hour after the historic debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump ended, Taylor Swift announced that she will be casting her vote for the Democratic candidate.

On Tuesday, Swift addressed fake AI posts of the star endorsing Trump. “Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” explained the artist. “It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.”

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift continued. “I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”

The singer emphasized her decision, writing: “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story.” The 14-time Grammy winner signed her post as “Taylor Swift” and “Childless Cat Lady.”

The sign-off was a direct dig at Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, who received sharp backlash for complaining that America is being run “by a bunch of childless cat ladies, who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made,” while referring to Harris, who has two stepchildren through her marriage to Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.

In 2020, Swift publicly supported Biden and Harris. “The change we need most is to elect a president who recognizes that people of color deserve to feel safe and represented, that women deserve the right to choose what happens to their bodies, and that the LGBTQIA+ community deserves to be acknowledged and included,” Swift told V Magazine at the time. “Under their leadership, I believe America has a chance to start the healing process it so desperately needs.”

While the topic of whether Swift would publicly announce her endorsement has long been discussed in the media during this year’s election, her fans have wasted no time in rallying behind Harris. On the same day that President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race in August and fully endorsed the vice president, Swifties for Kamala — a coalition dedicated to helping elect Harris as the 47th president of the United States, mobilized. The movement has since gained thousands of followers across multiple social media platforms, and raised more than $138,000 for the Democratic candidate in a virtual rally featuring singer-songwriter Carole King and senators Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand.

Harris’ vice presidential pick, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, told MSNBC on Tuesday that he was “incredibly grateful” for Swift’s endorsement. “I say that also as a cat owner, a fellow cat owner,” he added. “That was eloquent and it was clear, and that’s the type of courage we need in America, to stand up.”

“We’ve seen it out of those Republicans who were at the DNC, we’ve seen it out of women who would like to have their own personal lives kept personal, but are forced to go out there cause they nearly died because they can’t get abortion services in a pregnancy,” Walz continued. “And now you have somebody like Taylor Swift, coming out and making that very clear.”

He also gave shoutout to Swift’s fans: “This will be the opportunity, Swifties — KamalaHarris.com — get on over there, give us a hand, get things going.”

Following Tuesday’s showdown, during which Harris dominated Trump (and his performance was even lambasted by prominent Republicans), the former president was asked in the spin room what he thought about Swift’s endorsement of Harris. “I have no idea,” replied Trump.
