Terrebonne Parish residents bracing for Tropical Storm Francine
TERREBONNE PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Terrebonne Parish could also see some of the worst of Francine. The parish is all too familiar with hurricanes as residents tell WGNO they get PTSD whenever a storm is on the horizon.
For many, right now, it’s all about shoveling to get their sandbags ready. Joshua Plaisance says his home is boarded up and secure, but came out to help others prepared by shoveling sandbags for them.
“The women like it a little lighter on the bags, so just trying to feel everybody out and see what they need. Trying to get the people that need less out of here quicker so it won’t be so crowded,” said Plaisance.
Mandatory evacuation, curfew issued for Zone 1 of Terrebonne Parish
In recent days, Terrebonne Parish received more than 10 inches of rain. Councilman Carl Harding mentioned they closed the floodgates and are working to drain as much water quickly as possible.
“Pumps are sufficient. Our public works department whether it’s forced draining or gravity draining they are actually sufficient are operate. All systems are a go,” said Harding.
For any Chauvin resident, any sign of a hurricane worries them. Maxine Fazzio says this time of year has taught them to stay prepared.
“Pick up things that could fly in the air and damage other people’s property. Make sure we have extra water, food, and everything that we need. Batteries for flashlights,” said Fazzio.
Francine forecast to make landfall in Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane Wednesday
Of course, everyone in Terrebonne Parish is praying they’re spared. For them, it’s been three years since Hurricane Ida, and some are still trying to rebuild after Hurricane Ida.
“Financially people are just having a hard time repairing. You know some of them don’t have insurance, so little by little they are doing things, but if another hurricane comes.. I’m sure people are very depressed,” said Fazzio.
The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office has announced a curfew for Zone 1 starting at 7 pm tonight. A mandatory parish-wide curfew will also be in effect shortly, as they continue to monitor the storm.
