'Things happened in the '80s': Women Trump fans explain their faith in Brett Kavanaugh
At a Thursday campaign rally in Rochester, Minn., female supporters of President Trump and his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh explained their skepticism over allegations that the judge sexually assaulted women decades ago.
“I think Brett Kavanaugh is a great man, and whatever this woman has to prove I think she has set us back, as women, many years,” said a woman named Kathy who wore a red “Make America Great” hat.
The rally took place hours before the Senate voted Friday to advance Kavanaugh’s nomination to a final vote on Saturday.
“I mean, things happened in the ’80s,” a Trump fan named Sharon told Yahoo News. “Are we proud of what happened in the ’80s? No, but if you put yourself in a situation where things like that can happen to you, either speak now or forever hold your peace.”
Kathy Tyler, of Eden Prairie, Minn., echoed an argument made by the president this week.
“I may be a woman, but I still believe that a person is innocent unless proven guilty,” she said.
Kavanaugh’s nomination to the court, and the charges made against him, have proven to be a potential rallying cry for Republicans, with polls showing a rise in GOP voter enthusiasm as the sexual assault charges were investigated by the FBI.
Yet not all female Trump supporters at his Minnesota were in lockstep with the president’s messaging about his nominee.
“I think that women should support Trump, but this whole Kavanaugh thing — I mean, I don’t think there’s quite enough evidence, but I don’t think that we should discredit what women do actually go through,” a young woman named Hannah said while holding a sign that read “Women for Trump.”
