What time is Joe Biden's interview today? How to watch him and George Stephanopolous

The stakes could not be higher for Joe Biden's interview with George Stephanopoulos on Friday.

Journalists say things like that all the time; you probably don't have to look too far to see Joey Chestnut's banishment from the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest described in similar terms. When everything is treated as important, nothing really is.

This time, though, the sense of importance and drama is not hyperbole. It is not a stretch to say that the future of Biden's candidacy depends, at least in part, on his performance in the interview with Stephanopoulos — not just what he says, but perhaps even more importantly, how he says it.

The reason for the urgency is simple: By any reasonable standard, Biden bombed the debate with Donald Trump on June 27. His answers wandered, he seemed tired and a little lost at times, mouth agape in split-screen as Trump spoke, even freezing up at one point.

This is not to say that Trump was an eloquent statesman; he offered an endless stream of lies and misstatements.

Will Joe Biden be replaced?

Ever since the debate, Democrats have struggled to decide whether Biden is the best candidate going forward, or if he should be replaced. It's not that easy — Biden, who reportedly told Democratic governors on July 4 that he needed more sleep and needed to curb his late-night work — would almost certainly have to withdraw his candidacy for the party to choose another candidate. The Democratic National Convention begins Aug. 19.

Supporters have urged Biden's staff to get him in front of cameras more, to try to prove that the debate performance was an anomaly. (Biden rarely gives press conferences or sit-down interviews with major media outlets, which some say is a way of protecting him.) The interview with Stephanopolous is considered the first such opportunity; thus its outsized importance.
