Trader Joe’s Is Recalling 653,000 Tangerine Mango Candles Over Fire Safety Concerns: Updates

Candles can fill a room with a pleasant scent, but they can also present safety risks. In fact, Trader Joe’s has recalled thousands of their Mango Tangerine scented candles due to fire hazards, even though they only started selling the product in June. Keep scrolling for updates. 

Why did Trader Joe’s recall the Mango Tangerine scented candle? 

The popular grocery chain announced on August 15 it was recalling 653,000 sold units of the citrus fruit-smelling candle. The candle flame can spread from the wick to the wax causing a larger than expected flame, reports the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC).  

The firm revealed that it received 14 reports of incidents involving high flames with the recalled candles, including three reports of minor property damage and two reports of minor burns. 

Course of action for customers who purchased a recalled candle from Trader Joe’s

The US CPSC is urging consumers to immediately stop using the recalled Mango Tangerine Scented Candles sold in June 2024 and return the candle to any Trader Joe’s store for a full cash refund of $4.  

Alternatively, the commission says, customers can complete the Product Feedback Form online at https://www.traderjoes.com/home/contact-us/product-feedback to receive a $4 Trader Joe’s gift card by mail.  

Consumers will receive a response from Customer Relations requesting a receipt or a photo of the candle. 

All about the Trader Joe’s Mango Tangerine candle 

“Ever since we added a Home, Bath & Beauty category to our annual Trader Joe’s Customer Choice Awards ballot, our rotating lineup of seasonal Scented Candles have collectively nabbed the top spot,” reads the Trader Joe’s product description of the recalled candle. “Between their unbeatably realistic scents, their natural soy wax blend & all-cotton wicks, and their totally travelable tin packaging (lid included!), they simply can’t be beat!” 

The internet responds to Trader Joe’s candle recall 

About a month prior to the official recall, a Reddit thread was posted based on a product safety notification from the company about the candles and urged anyone who bought one to return or discard it. While many shoppers said they didn’t have a problem burning their candles or were disappointed because they were excited to use their own, others reported safety risk incidents.  

“Just had a terrible experience with this candle in which it melted the entire top layer of wax in mere moments, caught itself on fire, and stunk up my whole house,” wrote one user. “Incredibly unsafe, good to see it being recalled.” 

“One of the cashiers made a comment to me a few months ago that one of the candles almost caught fire because the flame was feet high!” said another. “Must be a universal issue. Def won’t be buying them anymore.”  

“All of their candles are messed up, I rarely buy them because they never burn right,” one comment read. “I recently bought the one that goes with the Brazil nut and the wick is sideways.” 

Past Trader Joe’s recalls 

Back in April, fresh basil sold at Trader Joe’s locations across the country was voluntarily recalled by the company after being linked to a rise in salmonella infections. 

The Infinite Herbs organic basil was pulled from shelves after salmonella bacteria sickened 12, including one hospitalization, across seven states, the Food and Drug Administration announced.  

In March, the company reported potential salmonella in its 50% Less Salt Roasted & Salted Whole Cashews. That same month, potential foreign material (plastic) was reported in its Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings.  

In February, related to an FDA recall of Rizo-López Foods, Inc. dairy items used in a wide variety of foods from many retail brands, Trader Joe’s recalled products made with cotija cheese, as the cheese was found to potentially be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This included the Chicken Enchiladas Verde, Cilantro Salad Dressing, Elote Chopped Salad Kit and Southwest Salad. Also, that month, the Chicken, Lentil & Caramelized Onion Pilaf was recalled for potential foreign material.
