Trump Grasps for Votes in New York: ‘What Do You Have to Lose?’
Donald Trump vowed to “win New York” in the 2024 presidential election during a campaign stop in Uniondale on Wednesday. The former president has lost his state of birth twice, once in 2016 and again in 2020, and in every presidential election since 1984, New York has voted Democratic.
In an attempt to paint himself as a defender of the working class, Trump referenced a national survey from the Teamsters showing a majority of the union’s membership supports him. The Teamsters announced on Wednesday, however, that the union is not endorsing either candidate, and several local chapters, including the Long Island chapter, have publicly endorsed Harris.
Elsewhere in his campaign speech, Trump reiterated his usual fear-mongering tactics targeting undocumented immigrants and false election claims, and likened the United States to a “third world nation.” Addressing New Yorkers, Trump pitched: “With crime at record levels, with terrorists and criminals pouring in and with inflation eating your hearts out, vote for Donald Trump. What the hell do you have to lose? What do you have to lose?” It was a line he used to when trying to appeal to Black voters during his run for the White House in 2016.
In response to Trump’s remarks on Wednesday, the internet took it upon itself to answer the former president. In a post shared to social media, Rep. Adam Schiff replied: “Years of progress on climate. The return of high tech manufacturing. Our standing around the globe. The Affordable Care Act Medicare and Social Security. Our democracy. Let’s not find out.”
What do we have to lose?
Years of progress on climate
The return of high tech manufacturing
Our standing around the globe
The Affordable Care Act
Medicare and Social Security
Our democracy
Let's not find out. https://t.co/vvi72Tfiuy— Adam Schiff (@AdamSchiff) September 19, 2024
Trump’s hateful rhetoric has reached fever pitch levels following his disastrous debate against Vice President Kamala Harris earlier this month. After echoing J.D. Vance’s racist lie about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, Trump has claimed ignorance while declining to denounce the bomb threats in Springsfield and doubling down on his claim that the town has been “taken over by illegal migrants.”
