Trump tariffs take effect ahead of more mass layoffs
A back-and-forth on tariffs, mass layoffs at the Department of Education and a bill to keep the government funded made for a busy day in Washington, D.C., yesterday. Here’s what to know.
Tariffs: President Trump’s 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports went into effect today after he threatened to double them for Canada yesterday. He backed down after Ontario rescinded a 25% surcharge on electricity supplied to the U.S. [AP]
Mass layoffs: Ahead of a deadline for federal agencies to begin large-scale layoffs tomorrow, the Education Department laid off nearly half of its 4,400 workers. Trump has said he wants to dismantle the department. Here’s what that could mean. [USA Today/Yahoo News]
Funding bill: House Republicans voted 217-213 to pass a bill that’ll keep the government funded through September. The bill now heads to the Senate, where Democrats face tough decisions on how to vote ahead of Friday’s deadline. [ABC News]

3 QUESTIONS
...about Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney
I asked Yahoo Entertainment reporter (and self-proclaimed John Mulaney fan) Kelsey Weekman about what to expect from his new show tonight.
Divya: First, for the unacquainted, what should we know about Mulaney?
Kelsey: I adore all five of his stand-up specials, but I really fell in love with his work as a writer for Saturday Night Live. Everybody’s Live is a spinoff from the experimental series Everybody’s in L.A. that he did at last year’s Netflix Is a Joke Festival.
Divya: So, what should we expect from the new show?
Kelsey: I’m expecting a variety talk show that actually leans into the host’s stand-up prowess. Everybody’s Live will likely channel Mulaney’s quick thinking and pop culture savvy into an interview show that, unlike others, takes the risk of being fully live.
Divya: What’s your favorite John Mulaney moment?
Kelsey: I actually have two! Lines from his 2012 New in Town stand-up special are still part of my personal lexicon, and I consider the “Diner Lobster” Les Miserables parody from Saturday Night Live required viewing.
Who will be in the first episode? Michael Keaton and Cypress Hill, among others.
FEEL-GOOD MOMENT
South African high schoolers at an annual sports competition recently performed perfectly choreographed flash formations while supporting their team. Among the songs they sang: Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” and “Hakuna Matata” from The Lion King. [USA Today]
Have a great day. See you tomorrow!
