UI announces first woman to head Gies College of Business

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — After a nationwide search, a longtime University of Illinois faculty member has been promoted to the Dean of the Gies College of Business.

Dr. W. Brooke Elliott will lead the college, the university announced Tuesday. She is the 11th dean of the college and the first female dean.

“I’m honored to be selected as the next dean of Gies College of Business,” Elliott said. “This College has an unbelievably rich history of excellence, and our best years are still in front of us. Our alumni base is more engaged than ever, and we have a culture of innovation that is unmatched. I’m excited to see what that future holds for Gies as we find even more meaningful ways to shape purposeful leaders around the world.”

Elliot has been a faculty member for the college since 2003. She has taught as a professor in accounting, became the first woman to lead the Department of of Accountancy, and oversaw online programs for the college. Before becoming named as the dean, Elliott was the executive associate dean of academic programs at Gies.

“Through a national search Professor Elliott’s dedication to and vision for the College’s future, along with the passion she brings to her current work, made her the clear choice to lead Gies College of Business.” said John Coleman, University of Illinois’s Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost. “She is an accomplished scholar and an empathetic, transparent and collaborative leader, and I am confident she will lead the college toward continued success.”

Elliot’s appointment is still pending approval of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. Her appointment is scheduled to begin August 16, 10 days before the fall semester starts.
