Oprah Winfrey, Kamala Harris to host virtual campaign event live from Michigan Thursday
Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, will be participating in an online campaign event with TV host, producer and author Oprah Winfrey livestreamed nationally from Michigan on Thursday night, the Harris campaign confirmed Monday morning.
The Michigan Chronicle, which covers news for Michigan's African American community, first reported the online event. It said in its report that the Harris campaign told the newspaper the event would be broadcast from an undisclosed location before a small invited audience.
On Sunday night, the White House said Harris had a campaign event in metro Detroit on Thursday before heading to Wisconsin but provided no other details. On Monday morning, the Harris campaign put out a news release with a message from Winfrey saying she would host "a virtual event with Vice President Kamala Harris and voters from across our great nation to talk through these freedoms we're fighting for and how you can help us win."
That release did not say the event would be held in Michigan, however. The campaign event with Winfrey is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday. The Harris campaign provided no other details.
"I am hosting a virtual event with Vice President Kamala Harris and voters from across our great nation to talk through these freedoms we’re fighting for and how you can help us win," Winfrey said in a message included in the Harris campaign release on the virtual event.
Because of online limitations, people who want to watch will need to reserve a spot online here.
The Chronicle reported that more than 140 grassroots groups from around the country will be represented as part of the event, including Win With Black Men, Win With Black Women, White Dudes for Harris, and Swifties for Kamala.
It was not immediately known if Harris planned any other events in Michigan this week.
She does have plans to visit Philadelphia as well, however. Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are all considered battleground states in this fall's election between Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump.
The Trump campaign announced late last week that the former president will hold an evening town hall Tuesday in Flint. Ohio Sen. JD Vance, Trump's running mate, will visit the Kent County community of Sparta earlier on Tuesday.
Harris was last in Michigan on Labor Day. That was her first stop in the state since formally accepting the Democratic nomination for president.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic nominee for vice president, was in Michigan late last week.
