Video captures moment when semi-truck spins out of control on icy Missouri highway

Blizzard and icy conditions brought by the onslaught of snow and wind during a historic storm have caused over 350 crashes and one fatality in Missouri, the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) said Sunday.
On Sunday, parts of northwestern Missouri and Kansas were under blizzard conditions, according to the National Weather Service. Roadways were blanketed in snow and ice, and authorities urged residents to avoid travel. State police shut down a stretch of Interstate 29 to search for stranded motorists and respond to crashes in Missouri.
One of crashes was captured on camera by Gracie Fudge, who caught the terrifying moment when a semi-truck slid across multiple traffic lanes and jackknifed on a highway in Kansas City Saturday.
"Oh My Gosh," a person can be heard saying in the video. "Okay, we need to call."
Fudge told Storyful she was recording a different car crash when the truck started sliding over. Fortunately, she and her family made it home safely. Lower overnight temperatures can cause wet roadways to freeze and become slick, according to MSHP.
Road conditions 'hazardous for travel'
Missouri State Highway Patrol, in multiple social media updates, said troopers were working “around the clock” to respond to crashes and stranded motorists since the onset of the storm. As of Sunday night, MSHP had reported 2,084 calls for service, 1,043 stranded motorists, 356 crashes, 31 injuries and one fatality. The fatal crash occurred as a vehicle began to slide after it stopped to let a passenger out, according to the crash report. The sliding vehicle then fatally struck a pedestrian and another parked vehicle. The victim, identified as a 61-year-old man, was pronounced deceased on scene.
The agency, in a Monday morning advisory, said "road conditions across the state continue to be hazardous for travel" and urged the public to "avoid travel if possible."
"The National Weather Service has deemed travel in these conditions, which are expected to linger once the precipitation ends, as 'impossible'," Missouri Department of Transportation said in a Sunday night advisory, adding "drifting snow and ice accumulations will make road clearance challenging."
MSHP asked the public to "allow time for road crews to work," and said troopers were "still responding to slide offs, stranded motorists, and crashes."
Much of Missouri, including the northwest, north central and west central parts of the state, is under hazardous weather outlook with bitterly cold temperatures and wind chill values Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
