Wade Wilson denied new trial; sentencing in Cape Coral deaths planned for Aug. 27
It took a judge shy of a month to rule that a Fort Myers man convicted of the brutal 2019 deaths of two Cape Coral women will not get a new trial.
Lee Circuit Judge Nicholas Thompson on Thursday denied a motion for new trial for Wade Wilson, 30, convicted of the deaths of Kristine Melton, 35, and Diane Ruiz, 43.
A jury recommended on June 25 in 9-3 and 10-2 votes for each of the victims that Wilson receive the death penalty. The same jury convicted him June 12 of the slayings of Melton and Ruiz, along with other charges linked to the crimes.
Wilson's sentencing, which was originally set July 23, was rescheduled to Aug. 27 during a July 19 motions hearing.
The defense has previously argued Wilson suffered several head injuries during his childhood and teenage years when he played different sports.
Prior to Wilson's 1 p.m. Aug. 27 sentencing, Thompson has allotted time during a 9 a.m. hearing the same day to rule on pending motions.
