Watch: Kid steals spotlight as Tennessee Rep. John Rose slams Trump verdict on House floor
A Tennessee lawmaker's son stole the spotlight in the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday after cutting up during a televised floor speech.
Rep. John Rose, R-Cookeville, was addressing the House in a five-minute floor speech when his son Guy, seated behind him, began smiling toward the camera.
The smiles then turned into a series of silly faces before someone off frame tugged him partially out of the camera view, where he sat quietly for the remainder of his dad's speech.
"This is what I get for telling my son Guy to smile at the camera for his little brother," Rose joked after.
Rose's office said Guy had just finished kindergarten and is spending the week at the office with his dad, while his wife Chelsea works and cares for their younger son, Sam, back in the district.
The moment of levity was discordant with Rose's speech. Rose railed against last week's conviction of former President Donald Trump, who was found guilty by a New York jury of 34 counts of falsifying business documents to hide "hush money" payments as legal expenses to cover up an alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels.
He is the first U.S. president to be convicted of a crime.
In the floor speech, Rose argued presidents should be granted immunity for "these types" of crimes, and that lawmakers could use impeachment and voters elections to hold presidents accountable instead.
A new poll conducted over the weekend found 49% of Americans think Trump should end his candidacy now that he is a felon, while 37% supported his continued candidacy, though separate polling indicates the verdict has yet to affect his favorability rating.
