This Week In History: On August 8, 1974, in the wake of the Watergate scandal, President Richard M. Nixon announced his intention to resign from office (the first American president to do so) in an address aired live on television and radio. He signed his letter of resignation the next morning. Vice President Gerald Ford took the oath of office the same day. Nixon is shown here during a 1981 visit to Columbus.
