Jessica Biel regrets that she dressed 'so sexy all the time' when she was younger
Jessica Biel, like many of us, has looked back on her wardrobe and cringed. Unlike many of us, her every outfit is captured on film. Every. Single. One.
But The Sinner star, now 36, is good-natured about it, and she even spoke about her biggest fashion regret in an interview for InStyle.
“I wish I would’ve explored some different shapes, and not gone so sexy all the time,” Biel told The Nutcracker and the Four Realms actress and Biel fan Ellie Bamber in the new issue. “I think if you look at some of my earlier choices, maybe it didn’t need to always be about the body. I know it’s a vibe that you feel when you’re young, but still that’s what I would’ve done a little differently.”
Biel got her start as a teen playing Mary Camden on the family drama 7th Heaven, and she’s said in the past that she felt somewhat imprisoned.
“I think I definitely sort of butted up against those limitations and those boundaries for a multitude of reasons. Because, yeah you know, you can only do so much with a particular character specifically on a show like that,” Biel said on the “Awards Chatter” podcast, per E! News. “We really had to sort of stay in the boundaries of a somewhat religious family and teaching lessons, and when ya know you’re 16, 14, 15, 16, you get to a point when you’re like, oh man, I just want to do something different. I just want to cut my hair, and I just want to dye it a different color, and I can’t do all these things because I have this contract.”
She did end up cutting her hair, by the way. Biel also shocked by posing for racy photos in Gear magazine when she was just 17.
“I certainly had to apologize to Aaron Spelling,” Biel said on the podcast. “I think my entire crew and cast were, needless to say, shocked. The worst part was I had to go back to work. The thing comes out and literally I had to go back to work that next morning. Everybody was … they didn’t know if they should look me in the eye, and I was just a mess. I didn’t … you’re young. You don’t mean to hurt people. You don’t mean to do this.”
These days, years away from 7th Heaven, Biel has a keen sense of what looks good on her, regardless of trends, and she’s obviously got the whole style thing down. In addition to her other style cred, she’s just designed a yoga collection with Gaiam.
When she does finds herself in need of another opinion, she told InStyle that she turns to husband of six years, Justin Timberlake. He’s the person whose fashion opinion she trusts the most.
“I say, ‘Justin, does this work? What’s wrong with it? And how do I fix it?’ He is my best fashion bounce-off.”
