Arsenal to profit from sell-on clause amid ￡10m deal reports
Former Gunner Mark McGuinness is set to leave Cardiff City for Luton Town in a deal worth up to ￡10m, with Arsenal to profit from a sell-on clause.
Rob Phillips reports for the BBC that Mark McGuinness is set to join Luton Town in a deal which could eventually be worth ￡10m, including add-ons.
McGuinness’ current club Cardiff City have given him permission to have a medical, after leaving him out of their squad for their Championship fixture at the weekend.
The move is good news for Arsenal, as the Gunners reportedly put a sell-on clause in the defender’s deal when they sold him in 2021.
Reports at the time of the Cardiff move suggested Arsenal had opted for a sell-on clause instead of a transfer fee, to allow the deal to go through.
Rumours have hinted the clause is in the region of 20% to 25%, though no Arsenal correspondents have ever reported those details.
If true, Arsenal could earn as much as ￡2.5m from the deal, but only if and when McGuinness meets all of his add-on targets with Luton.
Whether Arsenal end up profiting or not, the move is a positive one for McGuinness, with Luton looking to bounce back up to the Premier League.
The centre-back made 86 appearances for Cardiff, and if he leaves now then he’ll do so on a high. He scored and helped his team to keep a clean sheet in his last Cardiff appearance against Bristol Rovers in the League Cup last week.
