Derrick Taylor, Lake View Chiefs race to regional track behind area-meet records
San Angelo Lake View’s Derrick Taylor won two individual titles and was part of two area meet record-breaking relays Friday at the Districts 3/4-4A Area Track and Field Meet at Lowry Field in Lubbock.
The junior won the boys high jump and the 200 meters while also running a leg on the Chiefs’ gold-medal 4X200 relay, which broke a meet record. Taylor also ran on Lake View’s third-place 4x400 relay, which was one of three schools that bested the meet record in that event.
The top four finishers in each event of the meet earn a spot in the Region I-4A Track and Field Meet which will be back at Lowry Field April 29-30.
Taylor jumped 6-feet, 2 inches in the high jump. His teammate Devyn Paz cleared 6-0 and finished fourth.
Running second on the 4x200, Taylor helped the Chiefs to a time of 1:28.12, that improved on a Lake View school record set just last week by the team that also includes Brandon Durio, Paz and Brandon Cruz. It was more than a half-second better than the second-place relay.
Taylor then clocked a personal-best 22.19 to take the gold medal in the 200 by .5 to the nearest competitor.
The Chiefs’ mile relay, made up Paz, Durio, Taylor and Cruz, clocked 3:21.06 to finish behind Dumas (3:18.32) and Snyder (3:20.99). Lake View beat Snyder at the District 3-4A meet a week ago. The Chiefs dropped .72 off their previous-best and will get another shot next week.
The goal for all regional-meet qualifiers is a finish in the top two in their event at that meet, which will qualify them to the UIL State Track and Field Championships May 12.
Lake View had two additional regional qualifiers in individual events.
Freshman Skyylynn Carroll ran a time of 12.70 to finish fourth in the girls 100 to earn her first trip to regional.
Cruz, a junior, finished fourth in the boys 300 hurdles in a time of 40.85 to earn his second trip to regional in that event. Despite missing two weeks to injury prior to the district meet, Cruz was just slightly off his time of 40.66 that he ran to finish second at the area meet last year.
Just missing out on regional berths but scoring points for Lake View included sophomore Anastasia Brayer, who was fifth in the girls 3,200 and sixth in the 1,600. She clocked 13:20.67 in the two-mile and 6:10.95 in the mile.
Alexandrea Gomez finished sixth in both the girls discus throw (96-10) and shot put (33-5 ?).
Jaiden Fuentes was fifth in the boys 800 (2:11.88) while Pablo Madero was fifth in the 110 hurdles (15.94).
Juan Ortiz was fifth in the boys discus (131-1) and Jayden Mermella was fifth in the boys shot put (43-6).
R.J. Bohannon was sixth in the boys pole vault (10-6) while Faith Miller was sixth in the girls 800 (2:35.48).
