LOCAL ROUNDUP: Danville's Shaw wins sectional crown

Feb. 13—Danville's Phillip Shaw IV is returning to the IHSA Class 2A wrestling tournament and he is going to do it in style.

Shaw (33-1) won the 175-pound sectional title on Saturday at Mahomet-Seymour High School with a 11-4 decision of Normal Community's Gus Schreiber. Before that, Shaw had first-round bye, pinned Waterloo's Jackson Deutch (2:30) in the quarterfinals and Chatham-Glenwood's Justin Hay 7-0 in the semifinals.

Shaw's teammate Ty Rangel (25-9) is also going to state in the 132 class by taking third. Rangel beat Troy Triad's Brody Smith 7-0 for third after winning a consolation semifinal against Springfield Southeast's Brayden McBride 11-3.

In Class 1A, Oakwood/Salt Fork was able to advance seven wrestlers to the State Farm Center. Brayden Edwards (113) and Dalton Brown (175) were able to take second, while Pedro Rangel (132), Grant Brewer (150), Bryson Capansky (157) and Jamison Chambliss (190) each took third and Steven Uden (106) took fourth.

Westville/Georgetown-Ridge Farm advanced one wrestlers in Gabriel Kiddoo, who took fourth at 165.

At a 1A sectional in Stanford Olympia, Hoopeston Area's Angel Zamora won the 175-pound title. He won by pin over Knoxville's Brydon Walters in the quarterfinals in 2:23, El Paso-Gridley's Dominic Ricconi in 31 seconds and Unity's Thayden Root in 3:47.

Teammate Ayden Larkin battled through the consolation round at 157 and was able to advance with a fourth-place finish.

The wrestlers that advanced will start action at the IHSA wrestling tournament on Thursday.

Danville 51, Glenbard South 41

DANVILLE — The Danville boys basketball team delivered in the last game of the Watchfire Signs Shootout on Saturday, beating Glenbard South 51-41.

Ja'Vaughn Robinson had 17 points to lead the Vikings and was named Player of the Game, while CL Dye had nine points, Devan Larkin and Persiris Menifield each had seven, Jerry Reed had six and Darius Jay added five.

Danville started the weekend with a 62-36 loss to Peoria Richwoods. Robinson had 16 points to lead Danville, while Dye had 10 and Reed added five.

The Vikings will hit the road today to play Champaign Central.

Keison Peoples had 16 points to lead the Blue Devils and was named Player of the Game, while Ayden Ingram had 12, Micah Stanford had 11, Chaz Dubois had 10, Anderson Thomas had six and Caden Kelemenic added five.

BHRA started the weekend with a 68-37 win over Salt Fork. Peoples had 20 points to lead the Blue Devils, who had a 35-11 halftime lead, while Keleminic had 12, Dubois had 11, Stanford had eight and Landon Leigh added seven.

Evan Webb led the Storm with 23 points, while Julian Baum had eight points and Jameson Remole and Kamdyn Keller each had three.

The Blue Devils will return home today to play Westville.

Austin Stein had 13 points and three assists to lead the Trojans in Friday's game, while Urban Roarks had eight points, five rebounds and three steals, Coye Ferguson had seven points and seven rebounds and Landon Herzog had four points and four rebounds.

Against Clinton Prairie, Ferguson had 10 points and 12 assists, while Stein and Herzog each had nine points and Curt Slider had five points.

CHRISMAN — The Storm made quick work of the host Cardinals in an IHSA Class 1A regional semifinal on Monday.

GEORGETOWN — The Georgetown-Ridge Farm girls basketball team eliminated Schlarman Academy 45-17 on Saturday in an IHSA Class 1A regional.

Kendall Roberts had 16 points to lead the Buffaloes, who had a 20-0 first quarter lead, while Milee Ellis had 13 and Sydney Spesard added eight.

Addison Forsyth had eight points for the Hilltoppers, while Izzy Bogen had four and Devyn Gose added three.

The Buffaloes continued regional play on Monday against Arcola at Chrisman High School. If Geo-RF wins, they will face Salt Fork on Friday for the regional title.

Nikita Taylor had 10 points for Oakwood, who had a 18-16 halftime lead, while Bella Bradford added four.

Maddie Barnes had 13 points to lead the Cornjerkers, while Claire Dixon had 12 and Brylie Cox added 10.

Oakwood traveled to Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin High School on Monday to play Watseka, but the Comets lost 48-26.

Arrowsmith had 11 points in the loss, while Nikita Taylor added eight.

JOLIET — The Danville girls bowling team faced off against teams from all over the state on Saturday an IHSA bowling sectional at Town and Country Lanes.

The Vikings did not advance but ended up eighth out of 12 teams in their first sectional.

Armani Bankhead ended up 30th overall with a pin total of 1,006 to lead Danville, while Phoenix Jimson was 43rd (958), Hannah Lowe was 51st (920), LinAnn Riggleman was 55th (903), and Adrienne Michelletti was 73rd (842).

MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

PEORIA — Down 39-38 at halftime, the Danville Area Community College men's basketball team went all out in the second half against Illinois Central College.

The Jaguars outscored the Cougars 38-21 in the half to clinch a 76-60 win on Saturday.

Terrence Ringo had 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead DACC, while Ryan Caddell and Martez Rhodes each had 13 points, Donovan Parker had 10 points, Darius Davis had nine and Jaylen Simmons added seven.

PEORIA — The Danville Area Community College women's basketball team hit the road to face Illinois Central College on Saturday.

The Lady Jaguars were only down 18-14 after the first quarter, but could not keep up with the Lady Cougars as they lost 88-49.

Keiara Gregory had 13 points to lead DACC, while Jillisa Briggs had nine points, nine rebounds and two steals, while Wariya Alhassan had eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks, Rylee Dowers had six, Julissa Danglade had five points and Jayla Greer and Stephanie Stephen each had four points.

The Lady Jaguars will return home to play Parkland College on Wednesday.

CHAMPAIGN — Camille Hobby had 16 points and 11 rebounds, but the Illini lost to the Terrapins on Sunday.

Genesis Bryant had 13 points for Illinois, while Adalai McKenzie had 10 points, Gretchen Dolan had six points and Kendall Bostic had eight rebounds and three assists.

The Illini is 11-12 overall and 5-8 in the Big Ten and will travel to Penn State on Thursday.
