RAILRIDERS: Top prospect Dominguez returns in victory
MOOSIC — Jasson Dominguez made a successful return to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Friday night.
Sidelined since June 15 with a left oblique injury, the New York Yankees top prospect came up with a key two-out, two-run game-tying single in the sixth inning of the RailRiders’ 8-5 victory over the Worcester Red Sox at PNC Field.
Batting leadoff as the DH, Dominguez had five plate appearances and went 1 for 4 with a hit by pitch. After the game, he said he felt good.
“I didn’t feel my oblique at all,” Dominguez said. “I’m in pretty good shape right now.”
Nicknamed “The Martian,” Dominguez earlier this season was working his way back from Tommy John surgery last September to repair a right UCL tear. After starting his rehab at Single-A Tampa and Double-A Somerset, he joined the RailRiders in early June. After going hitless in his first game, he had hits in his next eight games, including a four-hit game against the Norfolk Tides on June 9. He was batting .389 (14 for 36) with two home runs and three RBIs.
But during a game in Rochester on June 15, he checked a swing and felt a tweak near his oblique and landed on the injured list.
“It was tough,” Dominguez said. “I hadn’t played in nine months, rehabbing one thing, and then days after that I got another thing. It was frustrating, but at the same time it is what it is. You’ve just got to go through.”
Dominguez just had to be patient and let his oblique heal and get stronger.
Finally, he was able to return Friday night.
In his first two at-bats, he batted righty against Worcester lefthander Zach Penrod. He struck out in the first inning and was robbed of a hit on a nice play by Red Sox third baseman Chase Meidroth.
Righthander Jason Alexander relieved Penrod, so Dominguez batted lefty his next time up in the fifth and struck out. But in the sixth, he came to the plate with runners on second and third and two outs and the RailRiders down, 5-3. He lined a 1-0 pitch to right-center to score J.C. Escarra and Kevin Smith to tie the game at 5.
“I don’t think he wanted to challenge me with a fastball, so he threw me breaking balls,” Dominguez said. “I was hoping just to get a good pitch to hit, a breaking ball up. That’s what I wanted and I got a hit.
“Every time you can help your team win, it’s always going to feel good.”
One inning later, the RailRiders loaded the bases on singles by Agustin Ramirez, T.J. Rumfield and a bunt single by Brandon Lockridge. Escarra ripped a double down the first-base line to score Ramirez and Rumfield and give the RailRiders a 7-5 lead and chase Alexander in favor of Ryan Zeferjahn. Taylor Trammell scored Lockridge with an RBI groundout to make it 8-5.
That brought up Dominguez and he was hit by a 2-0 pitch on top of the left foot. The stadium held its collective breath until Dominguez trotted down to first base.
“Thank God it was nothing,” Dominguez said.
Manager Shelley Duncan is thankful to be able to write Dominguez’s name again on the lineup card.
“It deepens our lineup and brings a lot of energy to the squad,” Duncan said. “It’s good to see him back on the field. He’s worked hard to get to this place.
“Their pitching staff, Penrod and Alexander, were tremendous today. They made it hard on everybody. So for a big at-bat like Jasson had late in the game, that was huge.”
Duncan said the plan for Dominguez was to give him an off day Saturday and have him serve as the DH again Sunday. He probably won’t play the outfield until next week when the RailRiders host the Louisville Bats.
“We’ll see how he feels (Saturday) and re-evaluate,” Duncan said. “That’s the rough plan on paper, but that always changes.”
Dominguez’s return comes at an interesting time with the July 30 trade deadline approaching and the parent Yankees struggling.
“It’s a key for him to be healthy any time for as good as he is,” Duncan said. “He’s a really good player. When he’s at his best, he can help out the big league club. You don’t find too many guys like him.”
Added Dominguez: “Obviously, I want to come back and be able to play to help the team. But that’s a thing I really can’t control. I’m just focused right now on get back and be healthy.”
