Top Performances from the San Angelo Relays: Saturday, March 26, 2022
Here are the top performances during Saturday's 63rd San Angelo Relays:
San Angelo Central boys relays
The Bobcats won two of the three relay races on Saturday and coasted to a win in the marquee Division I standings. Central scored 96 points to just 62 for District 2-6A rival Midland High.
The team of Raven Ortiz, Cole McWilliams, Landon Eubanks and Coleton Gossett won the 4x100-meter relay while Ortiz, Darius Harvatin, McWilliams and Tyler Hill teamed to win the 4x200 relay.
Both did so in record-fashion.
On Friday, Central’s sprint relay foursome broke the Division I record in preliminary qualifying. They clocked a time of 41.97 seconds, beating the old record of 42.26 set in 2017 by Lubbock Monterey.
In Saturday’s 4x200 finals, the team of Ortiz, Darius Harvatin, Cole McWilliams and Tyler Hill clocked a meet record time of 1:27.71, to beat the record (1:27.93) set by Del Rio on Friday in the prelims.
San Angelo Lake View boys relays
The Chiefs also won two relays on Saturday, as they finished third as a team.
The 4x200 relay team of Gia Pablo, Derrick Taylor, Devyn Paz and Brandon Cruz clocked a time of 1:30.44 to beat Fort Stockton (1:32.01) by more than a full second.
On the 4x400 relay, Paz, Taylor and Cruz teamed with Brandon Durio – running second leg – to clock a 3:25.09 which ended up being the fastest mile relay time of all divisions. Midland High ran 3:26.33 in winning the Division I relay title.
Landon Eubanks, San Angelo Central
In addition to being on a champion and record-setting 4x100 relay, Eubanks clocked a time of 10.81 to win the 100 meters. Teammate Gossett was fifth in the 100 in a time of 10.95.
Derrick Taylor, San Angelo Lake View
In addition to his relay work, Taylor matched his personal best of 6 feet, 2 inches in winning the Division II high jump. Paz (6-0) was second in the high jump.
Brandon Cruz, San Angelo Lake View
Another valued relay member for the Chiefs, Cruz also won the 300 hurdles. It was his second consecutive win San Angelo Relays gold medal in the event. He clocked 40.33, which bested his winning time last year of 42.19.
Lesli Salas, San Angelo Cornerstone Christian
The three-time TAPPS Class 1A state champion in cross country made a big splash in her debut at the San Angelo Relays.
Not only did the junior “race up” against the Division III girls – which is made up of UIL Class 5A and 6A schools – but she won the 1,600 meters from wire to wire.
Salas clocked 5:26.10 to beat Mason Murray, the Abilene High athlete who won both the 3,200 and the 800.
Tate Hughes, Wall
The senior clocked 2:00.82 to repeat as champion in the Division II boys 800 meters. He lopped more than six seconds off his winning time from last year.
Zeke Saldana, Pecos
Saldana clocked a time of 10.67 seconds to break the record in the Division II boys 100 meters. His time bested the 2016 record of 10.86 by Denver City’s Cole Mcleroy. Saldana also won the 200 in a time of 23.45.
Taylor Gonzalez, Midland High
Gonzalez won double-gold on Saturday, clocking a time of 15.26 to win the Division III girls 100 hurdles and then running 45.39 to win the 300 hurdles.
Kelly Ufodiama, Round Rock Cedar Ridge
Ufodiama was another double-winner on Saturday in Division III girls. She clocked 12.04 in the 100 to break the 2017 record of 12.21 set by Kaizha Roberts of Plainview in 2017. She ran 58.63 to win the 400.
Valerie Hunt, Monahans
After winning the Division IV girls shot put on Friday, Hunt broke a record in winning the discus throw Saturday. She threw 129-1 to eclipse the 2017 record of 117-6 held by Grape Creek’s Lexi Knight.
Wall girls 4x100 relay
The Lady Hawk quartet of Kaylee Bartz, Abbie Boehle, Kamryn Williams and Cale Neighbors teamed to clocked a time of 50.81 and win the Division IV girls 4x100 relay. They knocked more than a second of the time they ran last week in winning the Sonora Bronco Relays trophy.
Ashlynn Evans, Andrews
Evans clocked 12.57 in the Division IV girls 100 to break the record of 12.75 set by Estacado’s Lindsey Minton in 2017. Grape Creek’s Kaylee Shelton, who was second in 12.59, also eclipsed the record.
Lexi Slaughter, Wall
Slaughter won the Division IV girls 400 in a time of 1:01.34.
Faith Quiroz, Ozona
The sophomore clocked 27.41 to win the Division IV girls 200 and repeat as champion of that event.
Hope Santiago, Monahans
The senior who is bound for competition at the University of Arizona in wheelchair events, won the combined boys and girls 100-yard race. Santiago placed third last year at UIL state in the girls 100 race and was fourth in the 400 and the seated shot put.
