10 Things to Know About Sofia Richie, Fashion’s New It-Girl

If you’ve reached peak Kardashian/Jenner/Hadid exhaustion, fear not! The universe is gifting you with a new crop of young girls with famous parents to fawn over. There’s Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny and Vanessa Paradis. She attended a Chanel fashion show in New York this week and sent the fashion world in flames. Hailey Baldwin, daughter of Stephen Baldwin, has scored six different magazine covers. And now Sofia Richie—Nicole’s sister, Lionel’s daughter—has landed her first magazine cover: the very first issue of Popular magazine. Sporting bleach blonde tresses and biting a leather bracelet emblazoned with “Richie” in golden letters, the 16-year-old is the perfect image of a young California punk. And so, to celebrate her budding career, here are 10 things you need to know about Sofia.
She’s super creative. "I want to do design, fashion, and music," she told Elle magazine last year. “Singing has always been the biggest passion for me. It runs in my family!”
She’s not allowed to put out a record… yet. Her dad taught her how to play the piano with his own songs, and although she spends a lot of time in the studio with him, he wants her to wait until she’s older to begin her music career.
When she does venture into music, she’ll likely keep it in the family. Joel Madden, of Good Charlotte fame (he’s also married to sister Nicole), has already offered to produce her debut album. “He takes me to the studio for voice lessons, and we write together,” she told Teen Vogue recently. “He’s really cool. He’s one of my best friends.”
Lionel’s OK with a modeling career, though. Sofia recently landed a modeling contract with Select Model Management, who also represents industry bigwigs like Agyness Deyn and Irina Shayk.
She wants to be the next Gisele… Sofia has said the career she wants to have the most, is the Brazilian bombshell’s. She also wouldn’t mind having a Tom Brady of her own. (Who wouldn’t?)
…but she won’t do runway. ”I don’t think I could ever do runway [like Kendall],” she told Elle,"I definitely envy her. I think she’s so dope for going that route." Very curious to see how that will play out!
She shopped in the boys’ department as a tween. “When I was 10, I would only shop in the guys’ section at the Gap!,” she told Popular in her cover interview. It has given her a form of #tbt anxiety, “My friends are like, ‘Look at me when I was a little kid, I was so cute!’ and I’m so terrified to show them my pictures, because it’s me in boy shorts and a ponytail and my brother’s shirt.”
Her favorite place to shop is her sister’s closet. Now that she’s grown out of her cross-dressing phase, she favors Nicole’s vast selection of Balenciaga and House of Harlow 1960. “Sometimes I go over to her house when she’s out of town, and I steal stuff—the nanny lets me in,” she confessed to Teen Vogue.
But at the end of the day, she’s just a normal teenager who loves Tumblr… Her wildly popular page features a mix of runway shots, cats, and pictures of Kate Moss and Johnny Depp, of course.
