2015 CFDA Fashion Awards Red Carpet
Gigi Hadid jumps on the nearly-naked train! Led by the likes of Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé, the model glowed in a sheer custom jumpsuit from Michael Kors. Her loose curls added to the goddess effect.
While her sister shined in gold Michael Kors, Bella Hadid, also in a jumpsuit, went for a more classic look in a black Misha Nonoo number.
Anna Ewers pulled off modern punk rock with the help of Alexander Wang the man and designs from his recent collection, creepers included.
Flashing one’s underwear for fashion’s sake is certainly trendy, but usually it’s more obvious. It’s unclear whether or not Julianna Marguiles, wearing a black Michael Kors gown, is showing off her full underwear (so in right now) as a sartorial statement or the flash accidentally revealed her undergarments. No matter which, Marguiles still shined in the sparkly number.
Zac Posen invited Maya Thurman-Hawke, the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, to be his date for the CFDA Fashion Awards. The 16-year-old made her red carpet debut in a metallic flower power dress that showed off her youth but elicited a fashion career — and maybe even more — in her future.
Kim Kardashain had a busy 24 hours. In one day, she announced she’s expecting a second child — yay! — debuted as “Glamour” magazine’s July cover girl, sent out a Tweet supporting Caitlyn Jenner on “Vanity Fair,” and then went to the CFDA Fashion Awards. Wearing a custom Proenza Schouler gown, with her husband Kanye West by her side in a Haider Ackerman suit, she hardly looked a few months along, although she admitted she gets really bad morning sickness.
Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen aren’t acting anymore — they recently disappointed many announcing they wouldn’t appear in the “Full House” reboot — and the fashion world’s thankful for that. Designers of The Row, they’ve been showered with accolades and acceptance for their streamlined work, and were nominees for Womenswear Designers of the Year. Their personal style’s reflective in their clothes and the twins, who wore their own label on the red carpet at the CFDA Fashion Awards, embodied their brand in black separates and flats.
Janelle Monae broke out of her from her fashion uniform of black and white menswear and wore a custom white and gold cape. Sometimes, change is a good thing.
Style Icon Award winner Pharrell Williams showed up to receive his award wearing a blue leather jacket, an orange button-down shirt with a white T-shirt layered underneath, jeans, black loafers, and a newsboy cap. His wife, showing her support in a black leather jacket, looked fresh off the prairie in a patch print denim skirt.
Her partner, Joshua Jackson, might be the star of the night in their pairing, he'l be presenting a menswear award, but Diane Kruger always wins a red carpet. The actress, in a red and black sequin Prabal Gurung gown, was the perfect combination of tough and pretty.
Looking more sex pot than girl next door, Michelle Monaghan dressed unlike herself in a gold embellished Monique Lhuillier.
Chiara Ferragni’s gone where no bloggers have gone before. First the Met Gala, and now the CFDA Awards! She proved her worthiness of a seat at the table by showing up in a Rebecca Minkoff outfit with the designer herself as her date.
The creative director of J. Crew might have picked her black suit out of the retailer’s catalog. The business separates are made more sexy and fashion-forward with the lack of shirt and metallic heels.
Sure, the LBD by Dion Lee looked great, but it was Emmy Rossum’s Paul Andrew shoes that were the talk of the night. The footwear designer, who was a nominee, designed a pair of stilletos inspired by the Chrysler Buildig’s architecture.
Fashion’s favorite new celebrity — who doesn’t love Cookie Lyons?! — wore custom Vera Wang. Not as sexy as some of her recent looks, the actress still looked flawless. Henson’s mostly been in black and the raspberry red’s a gorgeous change.
There’s no better model than yourself! Victoria Beckham wore one of her own pieces — and why wouldn’t she?!
January Jones stood out in pants amongst a sea of pretty dresses wearing a black and red satin cutout jumpsuit from J. Mendel’s Fall 2015 collection.
Her runway shows are always filled with splits and cartwheels so why would a red carpet be any exception? The Lifetime Achievement Award honoree performed gymnastics in a black and white striped jumpsuit with her styled her hair in that signature messy way. She added some bling for an added air of sophistication.
An up-and-coming musician wearing an up-and-coming fashion label — what a pair! Tinashe and Public School were a perfect match, not only for their comparable statuses, but the designer’s seem to capture the young star’s essence within the androgynous outfit.
On Liya Kebede, Joseph Altuzarra’s clothes couldn’t have looked any better.
From Sachin and Babi’s NOIR Resort 2016 (OMG, are we there already?!), Vanessa Hudgens was Hollywood meets Broadway glamour.
Florals for spring? Groundbreaking, at least according to Anna Wintour and daugher Bee Shaffer who both wore fauna-printed dresses.
What’s black, red, and super all over? Karlie Kloss in Diane von Furstenberg, of course! The model’s simple dress still managed to make a statement (mostly because the woman wearing it has the ability to make just about anything look amazing).
Ralph Lauren’s always been about classic elegance and Katie Holmes evoked just that in a silk green gown. The simple silhouette did all the talking as she styled her hair down and wore a pair of understated and mostly hidden drop earrings.
Katherine McPhee mixed it up with Paule Ka top and trousers with an Amanda Wakeley ankle-length vest for some drama. And then there are those glasses…
With Stuart Weitzman as her date, Chrissy Teigen needed a dress to show off her shoes from every angle and this white strapless number did the trick.
Leandra Medine, aka the Man Repeller, wore a fancy slip dress from nominee Rosie Assoulin.
Juliette Lewis gets some help with her full skirt from the piece’s designer Christian Siriano himself. With the amount of feathers attached, it’s no wonder she had an escort helping her along, but the excessiveness was wonderful and even welcome at the industry event.
Queen of the wrap dress wore a one-shoulder gown! The CFDA’s current president looked lovely — but not really presidential (and that’s not a bad thing) — in a printed dress of her own design.
Hosting the red carpet (her first time going solo!), Kelly Osbourne wasn’t all business in fun and futuristic custom Christian Siriano separates.
Jemima Kirke wore Rosie Assoulin, one of the nominees for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear. The bright red color fits with the actress’ flamboyance and the crop top and full skirt combo is cool yet red carpet appropriate.
Coco Rocha had her baby, Iona Conran, just a few weeks ago, but the top model’s already back on the red carpet. The new mother shined in a silver dress with sweet bow and toughened up the look with a dark lip.
The “Vampire Diaries” actress, who recently left the show that made her a teenage dream, looked all grown up in a Lela Rose ensemble. From the designer’s Fall 2015 collection, Dobrev might not have been dressed seasonally appropriate but the shimmery crop top and plume skirt were still nice.
The “Sports Illustrated” cover girl covered up (kind of) in a Milly ensemble. Davis paired a jacquard-like midi skirt with a bra top and a sheer cropped jacket that hardly served any purpose other than looking nice.
If the Met Gala’s considered the Oscars of fashion then the CFDA Fashion Awards is just like the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The Council of Fashion Designers of America, an organization of more than 400 of America’s foremost womenswear, menswear, jewelry and accessory designers, honors those within the industry for extraordinary work, with accolades decided upon by peer voting (hence the SAGs comparison). This year, Betsey Johnson’s honored with a lifetime achievement award, Instagram’s getting recognized for its influence, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino take home the International Award, and Mickey Drexler of J. Crew the Founder Award. Other accolades are still up in the air including Womenswear Designer of the Year, Menswear Designer of the Year, and the Accessories Designer of the Year, with big and small names such as Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen, Tabitha Simmons, Rosie Assoulin, and Ryan Roche all in the running.
Fashion would hardly be as prominent as it is without the celebrities that wear the clothes and many of them were in attendance to support their favorite designers. Julianna Marguiles maybe suffered a wardrobe malfunction wearing a Michael Kors gown while Kim Kardashian, who just announced she’s pregnant with her second child, was there looking sexy in custom Proenza Schouler as per usual. Katharine McPhee wore some wild glasses, Hannah Davis’ crop top was cute, Nina Dobrev’s skirt was made from pounds of feathers, and so much more.
