Elton John Seen With a Dolce & Gabbana Shopping Bag After Designers Label Him a “Fascist”
Earlier this week, in an interview with Italy’s Panorama magazine, it was revealed that Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have pretty staunch views when it comes to gay marriage and in vitro fertilization, telling the publication that—despite being gay and a former couple—they don’t believe in either. ”The only family is the traditional one,” said Gabbana. “Life has its natural course, there are things that must not be changed. And one of these is the family,” commented Dolce.
The real social boomerang though, was their comments on artificial insemination. Gabbana called kids who were born via in vitro as, “children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteruses for rent, semen chosen from a catalog.”
This of course sparked the ire of many celebrities, including Victoria Beckham, Courtney Love, Sharon Stone, Ricky Martin, and most notably, Elton John, who posted a long Instagram message with a photo of the designers. “How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic.’ And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF—a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfill their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana”
The Italians responded by calling John “fascist” on his Instagram. A loaded comment for sure, giving Italy’s history under the totalitarian regime of Benito Mussolini. ”It’s an authoritarian way of seeing the world: agree with me or, if you don’t, I’ll attack you,” Gabbana said in his own defense to Corriere della Sera newspaper on Monday.
“I wasn’t expecting it. I wasn’t expecting it from someone like Elton John I used to think—and I stress “used to”—was intelligent,” he continued. “What’s going on? You preach understanding. You preach tolerance. And then you put the knife in? All because someone else doesn’t see things your way? Is that supposed to be a democratic way of thinking? Enlightened? He’s ignorant, in the sense that he denies ways of seeing things that may not be his but are just as deserving of respect.”
To complicate matters further, John was allegedly snapped on Monday afternoon entering a L.A. recording studio with a Dolce & Gabbana shopping bag. This detail did not go unnoticed by Gabbana who immediately posted the Daily Mail exclusive on his Instagram. “But you Watch !! ??? Sir Elton with Dolce & Gabbana in Los Angeles !!! Coerente !!! 30 minutes ago !! 30 minutes ago,” wrote the enraged designer.
What was John thinking? Could he have not brown bagged it? Or perhaps it was a secret gathering of people who were planning to set all of their D&G pieces on fire. (Love has emphatically stated that she’s planning on burning all of her Dolce garb.) Whatever is going on, I’m sure this is not the last we’ll hear about this ongoing feud.
