From Bella Hadid to Christian Siriano: There Are a Lot of Tears at Fashion Week
There may be no crying in baseball, but when it comes to high fashion, that is clearly not the case.
Case in point? Model Bella Hadid. She is the toast of the fashion world right now, walking in some of New York Fashion Week‘s most anticipated shows, including Alexander Wang and French brand Zadig & Voltaire’s American runway debut. But being on top of her game doesn’t stop Hadid from falling victim to her emotions. In fact, the brunette bombshell was so overcome with happiness and pride that she shed tears at two different fashion week shows this week.
Hadid was first moved to tears during Prabal Gurung fall 2017 show, when models, including Hadid herself, closed the show wearing politically charged T-shirts featuring slogans like “Nevertheless, She Persisted,” “I Am an Immigrant,” and “This Is What a Feminist Looks Like” (worn by Gurung himself).
Hadid walked the runway wearing one that read, “The Future Is Female.” But before she took to the runway during a fashion week that has emerged as the most politically charged in recent history, she found herself overcome by the powerful statement the designer was making.
“I went out and walked, and right before [the] finale, when Prabal was about to go walk, I saw him tearing up and I just started crying because it was such a beautiful, moving show,” Hadid told Fashionista. “Everybody in the audience was crying during the finale; it was really, really powerful and I’m really proud of him. It was incredible.”
Hadid later took to Instagram to thank the designer for letting her be a part of such “an empowering show.”

The second runway that moved the model to tears? None other than Oscar de la Renta, a touchstone brand she has idolized for years. “I mean, literally, I also cried! I don’t know if it’s just a very emotional week, but that show has always been something really big to me,” she explained to Fashionista. “It’s such an iconic brand and I’ve always looked up to the designers. I cried when I got the show in general, and then when I heard I was closing, I was at a loss for words. [That dress] was so beautiful; when I first tried it on, it was so incredible.”
And it looked incredible. Hadid again took to Instagram to express her tear-inducing appreciation of the brand, captioning a photo of herself in the show’s closing with a request: “someeeebody pinch me!!! Walking this show, let alone closing it was truly a highlight of my year..it feels so surreal! I am so grateful.”

But Hadid wasn’t the only one shedding tears by the runway. Actor Harry Hamlin did, too, when he first saw his daughter, Delilah Belle Hamlin, walk the runway for the first time last year in the Tommy x Gigi show. “The first time we saw her walk, which was in the Tommy Hilfiger show here, I was in tears. I have to tell you. She’s my little girl. I mean, she’s my little girl and all of a sudden she’s walking in Tommy’s show and I was crying,” he confessed to Bravo’s The Daily Dish. But he didn’t let that stop him from being front and center once again during this year’s fashion week to watch his daughter walk the Sherri Hill show on Monday.
Then of course, there are the figurative tears dominating the NYFW runways. Designer Christian Siriano, who also embraced the now on-trend political T-shirts in his fantastically diverse fall 2017 presentation, sent models down the runway in full, flowing gowns with gorgeous glitter “tears” streaming down their cheeks.

Also embracing a teary undereye? Jeremy Scott, whose packed Friday night show saw makeup artist Kabuki painting a single shimmering droplet on the cheeks of some of the show’s models.
