High & Low Fashion Notes From One Direction's 'Good Morning America' Concert
Who cares about the fact that Louis Tomlinson is going to be a dad? Or that Zayn Malik has left the band? It doesn’t even matter if Harry Styles is single, Niall Horan dated Ellie Goulding, or if Liam Payne got a new tattoo. There are much more important things going on with One Direction — most notably, their evolving style. The boy band performed at Central Park in New York City on Tuesday, singing some of their hits including their newly released single “Drag Me Down” and the crowd went wild for the young Brits.
New York has been experiencing some hot and muggy weather as of late, which would make even a cold-blooded reptile sweat and want to shed a layer of skin. Yet Styles still insisted on wearing a silk Saint Laurent jacket. The varsity jacket has gold trim stripes on the hem and features a jungle motif, most prominently a ferocious tiger. He paired the statement piece with black skinny jeans and accessorized with some fabric hair ties on his wrist. The cloth hair ties have been all the rage recently for being gentle, and it seems that Styles, whose hair is currently shoulder length, might be a fan to throw his locks up into man buns and ponytails.
Payne wore a round wide-brimmed hat that magically stayed on his head despite bopping around the stage to some of their smash hits. It could’ve been the large amounts of hair gel that made the fedora stick, but bobby pins could also have helped it stay in place. Maybe his eclectic hat choice stems from the album’s feel. “That’s what this album’s about — we’re still going strong,” Liam said about the band’s new quartet status. Continuing about the upcoming record, he added, “I suppose it’s quite eclectic, isn’t it?”
Horan stuck with the sartorial feel of the rest of the band, wearing a gingham shirt. Smarter than Styles and Payne, he wore short sleeves and stood out with a fringed hem that could’ve possible been DIY’ed.
Michael Strahan, the football player turned morning talk show host, cornered Tomlinson into confirming he’s expecting a child — he’s a real journalist now! — but he still looked slick. Perhaps it’s impending parenthood that’s behind his tamed down hair and laidback look. While the rest of his bandmates rocked at least one distinctive item, Tomlinson just carried his news on his chest. Perhaps he’s already ushering in that dadbod life in preparation.
Being trendsetters — it’s just the story of their lives.
