On International Women’s Day, This Powerful Photo Series Shows the Beauty in All Women

In honor of International Women’s Day, designer Mara Hoffman collaborated with creative and social-activist agency Art Not War and photographer Amber Mahoney to create a special portrait series of 25 feminists, activists, and artists whose causes range far and wide but who unite on their fierce advocacy for justice, equality, and love for all.

The result is a gorgeous photo series that depicts these strong, independent women in a raw form. Notable participants include Cleo Wade, the feminist poet dubbed the “millennial Oprah,” and Domino Kirke (one-third of the Kirke sisters trio and newly wed to actor Penn Badgley). The advocacy work of the 25 featured women spans subjects relating to civil rights, domestic violence, trans rights, human trafficking, and reproductive rights, among many others

The series was shot over the course of five days in New York City. Using little production and natural light, the women were portrayed as authentically as possible. All wore clothes from Hoffman’s Spring 2017 collection (which is available now).

This isn’t the first time Hoffman has opened up her fashion brand as a megaphone for a broader political dialogue. In February, for her Fall/Winter 2017 show during New York Fashion Week, Hoffman tapped the four national co-chairs of the historic Women’s March to speak at her show, ditching the traditional runway for a mix of models and interpretive dancers of diverse races, ages, and gender identities.

The message behind this project is to bring awareness to the women’s social activism and their causes, but above all to strike up a conversation and connect women across the globe of all ethnicities and backgrounds with hopes of inciting action and change for women’s issues.
