Jennifer Lawrence Is So Over Body Shaming

Jennifer Lawrence loves food. If clutches weren’t so tiny, she’d probably bring a pie of pizza with her to red carpet events. So it comes as no surprise that at a press conference during ComicCon, she indulged when asked about her most recent meal. “I did eat a panini, and some cheese and crackers, and a wrap. I tried to grab french fries, too, and this stern lady swatted my hand away and said no!” She added, "I thought, ‘Wow, I haven’t been talked to like that since the first movie came out.’"
The fact that women — and even men — in Hollywood are set to strict standards in regards to their looks and weight isn’t news. Yet none have been as vocal on speaking against these norms as Lawrence (she even once said, “If anybody even tries to whisper the word ‘diet,’ I’m like, 'You can go f*ck yourself.’“) And perhaps because of her big mouth, which she’s at least attempting to control after years of unfiltered commentary, but mostly because her star status (she’s being paid $20 million, compared to Chris Pratt’s $12 million, in the upcoming sci-fi film Passengers), she feels she’s no longer subjected to body shaming.
"I had a conversation with somebody about the struggles with weight in the industry — I know that’s something I talk nonstop about,” Lawrence said. “And they were saying, 'All of the main movie stars aren’t very underweight.’ I said, 'Yeah, because once you get to a certain place [in your career], people will hire you. They just want you to be in the movie, so they don’t care.’ It’s more about the struggle for the actors and actresses who haven’t made it to a certain place.”
The 24-year-old, who’s at the San Diego convention promoting the last film in the Hunger Games series and X-Men: Apocalypse, believes that it’s those young actresses, yet to win an Oscar let alone get their SAG card, who are the most susceptible to being critiqued for their looks and weight, and are even on the receiving end of diet and plastic surgery suggestions, penalized for not adjusting to the norm. “I’m not really in a place where I can complain or speak to not getting enough roles, because I’m very lucky to have a lot of opportunities,” she said. "But I would be interested to hear someone who is not in two franchises answer that question.”
Yet the fact that Lawrence didn’t start blabbing about the injustices she faced until after she safely secured her spot as Hollywood’s golden girl is very telling. While she’s right that it would be great to hear from someone currently facing body shaming, many wouldn’t risk jobs for greater society’s sake.
