John Legend Speaks Out, Justin Timberlake Gets Cat-Called at PGA Awards
Awards season is one thing. Reality, often, quite another.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen weren’t all smiles on Saturday night, at the Producers Guild Awards. Teigen did perk up when her Grammy Award-winning husband pulled her in tight and planted a sweet kiss on her cheek on the pre show red carpet.
Inside the event, the duo took a seat at their table and kept mainly to themselves. When Legend later appeared on stage to present a clip of La La Land, he seized the moment to divert from the teleprompter and have a heart-to-heart with the audience.
“My wife and I were a little bit conflicted about being here tonight when we know what’s happening in the streets, we know what’s happening at LAX and the airports around the country,” he began, referring to the pro-immigrant rallies taking place at JFK and other major airports.
The singer proudly announced his disgust over Donald Trump’s policies. “Our vision of America is directly antithetical to that of President Trump. And I want to specifically tonight reject his vision and affirm that America has to be better than that.” His words were met with a roaring applause.
Nicole Kidman stunned in a nude high-neck embellished Prada gown with her hair tucked neatly in a braid. She smiled coyly as the red carpet photographers screamed for her to glance in their direction and quickly diverted her attention to husband Keith Urban, grabbing his hand, flashing him a grin, and cheerfully rubbing his back. The duo rushed inside to attend the pre-show dinner where the country singer sat with his arm tightly wrapped around the back of his wife’s chair.
Later on stage, Justin Timberlake, while presenting, was met with a high-pitched whistle from the crowd.
“Did you just cat call me? Grow up!” he joked.
James L. Brooks got a standing ovation from the room when he started his Norman Lear Achievement Award acceptance speech with a dedication to the recently departed Mary Tyler Moore.
“I can promise you as a woman she was everything you hoped or said she was. She had dignity, wit, off the chart work ethic, legs, intrinsically valiant. The woman at the center of our work who never complained, as in never, who shared credit with all the rest of us, made grace contagious. I want to give you the opportunity to pay her tribute so let’s have a hand for Mary.” Everyone applauded, especially after the legs comment.
La La Land took home the major category of the evening and was crowned Best Theatrical Motion Picture. Next stop: Oscars?
