Julianne Moore, Jennifer Aniston & Reese Witherspoon Say No to Mani Cam
E! really stepped it up for the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night with not one, but two mani cams—those awkward, box-like structures in which actresses are asked to parade their fingers to show off both jewels and manicures. But their efforts might have been for naught, as a trio of A-list stars refused to comply.
Julianne Moore told E!’s Maria Menounos, “No, I’m not doing that.” While Jennifer Aniston (who shares a publicist with Moore) said, “No thank you.” And Reese Witherspoon, who’d pulled Sophia Vergara on stage a minute earlier, shoved the Modern Family star into the mani cam, visibly moving herself out of the way to avoid being asked again.

At the 2014 SAG Awards, Cate Blanchett responded to E!’s mani cam request with, “Do you do that to the guys?” Since then, the hashtag #askhermore has taken off, as the public—and actresses—demand to be asked something more substantial than, “What are you wearing?” and “What did you have for breakfast?” Though the hashtag was founded last year by The Representation Project, Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls added fuel to the fire when they tweeted earlier this month: “.@eonline We want to know about more than just who/what a celeb is wearing! #AskHerMore on the #ERedCarpet + inspire girls everywhere!!”

Since then, Elle Magazine’s turned the tables, asking men the inane kinds questions women are often asked to answer on repeat throughout awards season. That came after Jennifer Garner famously said, “My husband and I do the same job…every single person who interviewed me asked me, “How do you balance work and family?” He said the only thing anyone asked him about were, “How were the boobs on that ‘Blurred Lines’ girl?”

And while it’s funny to hear men talk about just how long it took them to get ready or stumble over, “What’s in your bag?” things will really start to change when women refuse to answer the same old asks. Luckily, it looks like that’s finally happening.
