The Fanny Pack Is Back Again. This Time, Kendall Jenner Is Trying to Make It Happen
Kendall Jenner is a fashion trendsetter. She wears crochet to the clubs, accessorized a Chanel suit with a belly chain, and made headlines worldwide with a cluster of statement coats. But can she bring back the — gasp — fanny pack?
The model and reality star was spotted between shows at Paris Fashion Week wearing the once-ubiquitous dad-at-the-amusement-park staple slung over her shoulder, as Vogue styled it in an Alexander Wang feature this time last year.
Attempts to elevate the fanny pack’s status have met with minimal success, yet it continues to cycle through the fashion world every few years, including a major as-seen-on-Carrie-Bradshaw Gucci fanny pack moment in the early aughts.
Jenner paired the bag with a casual outfit composed of cropped trousers, a white sweater, and sneakers, because she knows that the fanny pack is enough of a bold style statement in and of itself. But that certainly hasn’t stopped her from sporting the oft-throwback accessory before.
Just last month, she was spotted entering the Christian Dior Paris offices wearing high-waisted jeans, a cropped sweater … and a quilted leather Chanel fanny pack. She was later seen wearing the pack at a Paris flea market alongside maybe-boyfriend A$AP Rocky and after walking in the Chanel couture show, before taking to her own website to call the vintage couture creation “so good.”
But chances are, she didn’t come up with the idea of the bag’s resurgence all on her own, even if the over-the-shoulder approach is pure Kendall. The model likely took her inspiration from the parade of next-generation fanny packs that were spotted on the hips of runway models at Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, and Chloé shows last year.
