Katy Perry has made a career out of being a real-life meme of sorts, so it was hardly surprising when she showed up with Riff Raff to the MTV Video Music Awards in replica versions Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s now iconic (and not at all ironic) all-denim looks from 2001. Both Perry and Raff seemed quite pleased with themslves as they sauntered down the red carpet and made social media explode. Although to some, this moment in pop music fashion history was sacred and not yet ready to be exploited. Our advice? Stick to the Cheetos outfits, Katy!

Unfortunately in this version of “who wore it best?” the award goes to McGowan, who fully committed to her exhibitionism, and forwent a bra as well.

It was a risk for the usually demure singer, and one that was perhaps not worth taking.

Lupita Nyong'o became the red carpet darling late last year, and then she let herself be dressed in this flapper ensemble and we all cried to the skies, “Why, Lupita, Why!” Between the headband, the feathers, the jewels, and the sad little dress worn underneath for modesty, the whole ensemble was a giant head scratcher. It was particularly heartbreaking because up until that point, we felt like she could do no wrong. But I suppose we can't get it right all the time. It’s ok, we still think she is fabulous.
