Nerves Are Overrated: Celebrities Refuse to Ditch Their Skinny Jeans

If you’ve started shopping for jeans for fall, one thing is abundantly clear: fashion’s over the skinny silhouette. Rachel Comey’s denim culottes are sold out, Frame’s bell-bottoms are everywhere, and Marques Almeida’s frayed boyfriend jeans are the new must-have.
On the one hand, fashion loves a change, and after nearly a decade of twig-like denim, it’s time for something new. On the other, there are legitimate health concerns around the skinny jean. Just last month, an Australian woman spent four days in the hospital after her too-tight pants constricted the blood supply to her calf muscles and she collapsed. The staff had to cut the jeans off of her body and Dr. Thomas Kimber of the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia told the AP, “We were surprised that this patient had such severe damage to her nerves and muscles.”
But who needs nerves?!
Fashion and science might recommend wearing more forgiving pants, but that doesn’t mean Hollywood cares. On Wednesday, both Hilary Duff and Bella Thorne stepped out sporting similar outfits in Los Angeles: white tank tops, big sunglasses, and charcoal gray jeans tight enough that you’d be forgiven for thinking they were wearing their new favorite leggings.

Why? Because they’re flattering. A fitted jean can elongate the leg, show off your curves, and easily be dressed up or down (depending on the wash). While bell-bottoms or culottes make a statement—they are the outfit—skinny jeans are like a blank canvas. They’re easy to wear—and that never truly goes out of style.
