Lily-Rose Depp Drives Photogs Crazy and Cara Delevingne Babysits at Chanel’s SS16 Fashion Show
Five million dollars. That’s the magic number buzzing through Paris this morning — the rumored cost of Chanel’s epic airport show. Dubbed Aeroport Paris Cambon, and more specifically, Chanel Airlines Terminal 2C, the Grand Palais was transformed into the hangar of Karl Lagerfeld’s dreams on Tuesday morning.
Guests showed their invitations — boarding passes, bien sûr — while passing under a large arrivals and departures board in the center of the runway that cleverly listed the locales of Chanel’s previously held resort and prefall shows (Tokyo, Seoul, Rome, Singapore, and Dubai among them). Chanel-clothed ticket agents and branded luggage carts offered Instagram fodder for street style stars like Anna Dello Russo, Giovanna Battaglia, and Garance Doré.
Right before takeoff, Cara Delevingne scurried in to take her seat in the center of the runway with her girlfriend, Annie Clark, and Lagerfeld’s godson, Hudson Kroenig, in tow. The budding actress might have retired from the runway, but she looked thrilled while taking the final lap with Lagerfeld and his godson (which, judging from the scowl on her face while sitting front row, might just be because she’d rather do anything than babysit a 6-year-old).

As for the clothes! If Lagerfeld was making a statement on the transient nature of fashion, he underscored that point by sending out 100 very different looks. Edie Campbell was the first to hit the runway in a plaid pantsuit with a full set of Chanel luggage with her. (Can’t wait to see which editors will be towing those babies next fashion season.) Of course there were tweed suits, double “C”-printed denim (sure to be a big hit), mix-and-match printed tops and pants with shirts tied around the waist, scarf dresses with a Chanel arrivals board print, and light-as-air floral print dresses that were spliced at the pleats. Lagerfeld’s rampant use of accessories made sure the show’s maximalist message was loud and clear: supersized aviators, bags layered with bags, flat sandals that lit up at the sole (like a tarmac, get it?), plus the luggage. Oh, the luggage! Every model rolled out a piece for the last looks. If only real airports were half as chic.
As any good celebrity knows, airports mean paparazzi. Lily-Rose Depp caused such a scrum after it was all over that two photographers started to push each other to get her picture, causing the frightened 16-year-old to be whisked away backstage by her mother, Vanessa Paradis.
Safely away from the fracas, Italian fashion diva Dello Russo offered a string of single-word reactions to the show: “Fun. Fantastic. Glamour. Fashion. Love. Woo!” she said. Wearing a white Chanel suit with high-heeled booties and sunglasses, she added, “I want more than the luggage. Accessories, hats, sunglasses … I liked it because it was super-accessorized. I like when the look is overdone!”
