'All About That Bass' Singer Meghan Trainor Loves Ariana Grande's Thigh Gap
The thigh gap, or space between a woman’s inner thighs when she’s standing with her knees touching, is divisive.
Some women aspire to have one, while others want to scream from the rooftops that the space is unnatural.
One would think “All About that Bass” singer Megan Trainor, whose hit song celebrates her curves, would be among the critics. But during a recent visit to Cosmopolitan.com, she said that wasn’t so.
During a videotaped game of “bass or treble,” in which she had to label things she liked “bass” and those she didn’t “treble,” she approved of the thigh gap.
“If you rock it, bass, I don’t know,” she said. “I like Ariana Grande’s nice thigh-gap. She’s got good legs.”
This seems like a very different message from the one in her song, where she sings, “Yeah it’s pretty clear, I ain’t no size two/But I can shake it, shake it like I’m supposed to do.” And, “I see the magazines working that Photoshop/We know that shit ain’t real/Come on now, make it stop.”
Some women who want, or have, thigh gaps go so far as to follow the motto “the bigger the gap, the better the girl.” The hashtag #thighgap has even become an inspirational one on social media.
The women who say that the space is definitely not the norm—few ladies are really built with stick legs—fear those chasing it are also on their way to developing eating disorders.
In September, Trainor said she was proud she was helping women love their bodies as they are. She told “Entertainment Tonight,” “I’m glad a lot of the comments I’ve gotten are about [girls’] eating disorders and how my song saved them—which is crazy, but amazing.”
