Missy Elliott’s ‘Save the Humans’ Bomber Jacket Has an Uplifting Message
This morning, Missy Elliott dropped her latest music video, “I’m Better.” And with her legendary history of dropping videos like “WTF (Where They From),” “Pass That Dutch” and “Supa Dupa Fly,” the visuals didn’t disappoint.
“He watching me like he watching Scandal,” she sings in an allusion to Shonda Rhimes’s hit ABC show. The three-and-a-half minute video, which she co-directed and co-choreographed, features underwater scenes, backup dancers bouncing on fitness balls, and the diva herself with what appear to be vinyl record lips at one point. Through it all, one jacket stood out for us.
“It is a dream come true to have something in Missy’s video, as she is really one of my top 10 favorite artists of all time,” Larry Tee, the designer behind the brand Tzuji, told Yahoo Style via email about the emcee donning his “Save The Humans” coat for the video. “She bought it last year and I had been waiting to get a photo of her in it.”
The coat in the video is bedazzled to give it an extra pop in the visual montage. Tee maintains that his team was not a part of that process. “Someone has sore thumbs after all that bedazzling,” he mused.
A DJ himself, Tee says the coat’s appearance means a lot to him. “I’m dying here,” he said. “I always felt she was an artist that hasn’t sold out while selling a lot of records. I also feel that as a DJ and designer, I have helped launch a lot of other artists and had to change with my creative urge, whether it was commercial or not.”
And as for what he meant by the slogan on the coat? “I was feeling we need a more caring and beautiful world,” he explained. “Sometimes I am not sure whether we should save the humans, but ultimately I think we all have a human side worth saving. It’s time to come together, not come apart. I couldn’t have had this message on someone I adore more!”
