What Hilary Duff Wore To Drop Her Child Off At School Causes Controversy

School administrations are constantly setting rules and regulations for their students on appropriate classroom attire, but it turns out parents also sometimes feel a bit of pressure to come correct in the style department when they make an appearance at their child’s school.

Case in point: Hilary Duff, who took to Instagram yesterday to show off the #OOTD she put together to drop her son off at school. “Hey moms! I came up with a semi cute outfit for school drop off! I usually roll in sweat pants or lulu lemons and look like a disaster but this morning I managed to throw something cute together and I thought would share,” she wrote.

In the accompanying image, we see Duff standing in a mirror, wearing a pair of denim short-shorts (which, we wager, would get her sent to the principal’s office at a lot of institutions), a tan sweater, sneakers, sunglasses, a crossbody bag, and trench coat.

Of course, commenters weighed in with their 2 cents on Duff’s look, with reactions ranging from supportive, “love the outfit!” to negative, “You call this cute?!? A lady of class and substance wouldn’t be caught wearing this,” to underwhelmed, “I’ve worn this so many times without picking kids up or dropping them off. Ain’t nothing new Hil.” Some commenters shared their experiences of being judged by school staff when they go to pick up their kids. “I feel like Diane always judges us in the drop off line, and this would really be so easy. Can I borrow your other trench?” one wrote.

Now, we know what you’re thinking: Who cares what parents are wearing at kid’s school for all of a few short minutes? A few months ago, a letter from a principal at a school in Darlington, U.K., went viral as the headmistress pleaded with parents to refrain from picking up their children in pajamas and slippers. “Could I please ask that when you are escorting your children, you take the time to dress appropriately in day wear that is suitable for the weather conditions? While this may seem to be a minor point, I am sure you will agree that it is important for us all to set our children a good example about what is appropriate.” Seems as if the threat of being judged as a parent for your attire — even when you’re well beyond your school days — is a real thing.

Duff seems to be pleased enough with her look. She’s a grown woman, working and taking care of her child, so she should feel free to dress however she wishes to — even if she is just wearing Lululemon pants. Granted, her Instagrammed look isn’t something we would call groundbreaking, but if it gets her from point A to point B, who really cares?
