‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’: First Look at Jimmy Smits as Amy’s Dad
Thanksgiving is a time to spend with family, and we’ll get to meet more of Amy’s on the Nov. 22 episode of Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine when Jimmy Smits guest-stars as her father. Yahoo TV has the exclusive first look.
“Stephanie Beatriz (Rosa) and Melissa Fumero (Amy) ran into Jimmy Smits at an event and said he was incredibly funny, nice, and awesome. They pitched that he should be Amy’s father,” co-creator Dan Goor tells Yahoo TV in an email. “As someone who has always been a fan of his, I was very, very, very into the idea. We immediately broke a story and then asked him to be in it. Serendipitously, it turned out he was a fan of the show and he agreed to join us. That’s a long-winded way of saying that Stephanie and Melissa had an amazing idea and deserve loads of credit.”
In the episode, titled “Mr. Santiago,” Amy plans Thanksgiving dinner and Jake (Andy Samberg) goes “full Santiago” — binder and all — to impress her dad, who’s a former cop.
“The mustache was Jimmy’s idea, and the amazing thing is: Five minutes after he thought of it, he was able to grow it from scratch,” Goor says.
The answer to our other burning question: No, Smits’s former Sons of Anarchy co-star Katey Sagal, who’s previously guested on Brooklyn Nine-Nine as Jake’s mother, does not appear in the episode. (Fingers crossed the families have a reason to meet in the future.)
Smits, who was most recently seen in Season 1 of Netflix’s The Get Down, will next co-star as Senator John Donovan in Fox’s 24: Legacy, which is slated for a two-night premiere in February following Super Bowl LI.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
