‘Impractical Jokers’ Stars Talk Getting Jaden Smith Tattoo and Meeting the Man Himself
Yahoo TV had the pleasure of welcoming Impractical Jokers stars James “Murr” Murray and Sal Vulcano to our suite at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 to chat about what stands out as one of the most memorable moments from the show: when Vulcano was given a large thigh tattoo of Jaden Smith’s face.
truTV’s hit series Impractical Jokers has a simple and sound concept to each and every episode: four friends — Murray, Vulcano, Joe Gatto, and Brian “Q” Quinn — challenge each other to perform generally embarrassing stunts and games in public. Should they fail to do as instructed, they get a thumbs down. If one Joker scores more thumbs down over the course of the episode, they get a punishment.
Those punishments have varied. One time, Murray was forced to pose nude on a rotating platform for an art class. Quinn was handcuffed to two giant turkey legs and sent out to a speed-dating event as an eligible bachelor. Vulcano was told he had to creepily snap underwater pictures at a swimming club. While those were embarrassing moments, one stands out as the most unfair — and permanent — punishment of all time: tattoos.
“Myself, Q, and Murr lost,” Vulcano tells us. “Joe is the only one who didn’t, so he needed to find a punishment he deemed fit for us and he made us get tattoos and the caveat was that we couldn’t look at them until he was done. We got to choose where they were.”
“They say I look like a ferret and they threw me out of an airplane and made me go skydiving,” Murray recalls. “Joe gave me a ferret skydiving on my thigh, which is bad, but not as bad as [Vulcano’s] thigh.”
“I had a tattoo of Jaden Smith,” Vulcano says. “A very accurate portrait of a 15-year-old Jaden Smith.”
Fortunately — or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it — Vulcano managed to show his tattoo to Smith.
“About two years ago this happened and two weeks later we were here at Comic-Con,” Vulcano says. “We saw someone dressed as Batman, in a white Batman outfit … it was Jaden Smith. And I just had the fresh tattoo! I approached him and his security stood in between us and said, ‘What are you doing?’ I said, ‘Oh, no, no, it’s not anything bad.’ I started to unbuckle my pants, which I didn’t realize what that would look like. And then they swarmed me. And then one of the security guys recognized me from the show. I literally took my pants down and showed Jaden. He was very gracious about it. Very surprised as well.”
“Sal writes him a letter, daily,” jokes Murray.
“He has not answered anything since that moment,” Vulcano reveals. “So if you’re watching, or you hear, Jaden, and want to grab lunch [that’d be good]. No pressure.”
