On ‘The Tonight Show,’ Maddow Gives Backstory to Trump Tax Return Announcement

Rachel Maddow, who broke yesterday’s biggest news headline, discussed with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon how David Cay Johnston received Donald Trump’s tax returns in the mail — that is, pony-express style. One of Johnston’s kids discovered the letter and called his dad to tell him the urgent news.

Because the tax return had a mysterious origin, Rachel Maddow’s team validated its authenticity, but they still needed one more thing — confirmation from the White House.

With the White House taking its sweet time responding, Maddow and company had another show prepared just in case it didn’t — but in the end, the tax return made the news.

Since the return revealed no ruble laundering, Maddow took a lot of flack for anticlimactic news, but she defended herself by saying she just wants to the speak truth — and she’s going to keep plugging away until she figures out the president’s finances.
