Martha Stewart Says ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Is ‘Not as Good as the Real Thing’

Martha Stewart sat down with Chelsea Handler on her new Netflix show, Chelsea, where the two discussed Stewart’s time behind bars vs. the Netflix show Orange Is the New Black.

Stewart, who served five months in prison back in 2004 for securities fraud and obstruction of justice, admitted that she does not watch the popular show based around a cast of characters in a female prison.

“It’s not as good as the real thing,” Stewart said. “When you live through something like Orange Is the New Black, the characters, the actual real characters, are better.”

And while Stewart chooses not to watch the show, she didn’t have much of a choice on what TV she watched while in prison.

“In prison it was BET television at all times of the day,” Stewart said. “I would get up really early to watch the news. You know, there’s only one TV available, and you have to sit in a room with hard chairs and you look up like this at the TV.”
