Singer Ed Sheeran Made a Cameo on 'Game of Thrones' and the Internet Lost Its Mind
On the Season 7 premiere of Game of Thrones, fans got an unexpected-only-if-you-haven’t-been-paying-attention-to-casting-news surprise when singer Ed Sheeran showed up as a Lannister soldier, and the Internet promptly lost its mind with fury.
Despite the fact that news of his cameo was announced back in March, and that the show has had other famous musicians guest-star during the seasons, like Sigur Rós, Coldplay’s Will Champion, and Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, the brief appearance of Sheeran had many fans screaming foul.
Some tweeted their desire to see the musician eaten, with one saying, “Next week on #GameOfThrones “A long lost direwolf eats Ed Sheeran’s face” … and I’m OK with that.” Another wrote, “Arya’s direwolf returning and eating Ed Sheeran is all I care about now.”
Thrones showrunner David Benioff explained the Sheeran appearance by saying, “We knew that Maisie was a big fan of Ed Sheeran, and for years we’ve been trying to get him on the show so we can surprise Maisie. This year we finally did it.”
The result of that very sweet idea led to one fan tweeting, “Ed Sheeran getting stabbed multiple times or getting beheaded in GoT is what i want to see.”

Sheeran himself Instagrammed a photo with the caption “Throwback to the time I was a Lannister,” so I guess at least there’s someone out there who wasn’t mad about it!
