Stephen Colbert Defends ‘Papa Bear’ Bill O’Reilly

In the wake of Fox News cutting ties with Bill O’Reilly after multiple sexual harassment allegations, Stephen Colbert shared a statement from Fox on The Late Show: “By ratings standards, Bill O’Reilly is one of the most accomplished TV personalities in the history of cable news.” To which Colbert replied, “By rating standards, he is. By moral standards, he was a self-righteous landfill of angry garbage.”

Then Colbert, “via satellite,” went to his conservative pundit character, “Stephen Colbert.” Standing in front of a cabin in the woods, his former character said that the people failed Bill O’Reilly, adding, “All he ever did was have your back, and if you’re a woman, you know, have a go at the front too.” He added, “Suddenly sexual harassment’s a crime? But that’s the country we live in now: Obama’s Trump’s America.”

“Stephen” invited Bill to live in a cabin with him and Jon Stewart. He said, “It’s fun. You’ll like it. We’ve got an animal sanctuary. Jon and I milk the goats. And soon, I hope, we’ll be milking you.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
