'The Walking Dead' Finale: 12 Questions That Need to Be Answered

SPOILER ALERT: Storyline and character spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead Season 6.

Number one: Was it Daryl’s blood that splashed onto the screen at the end of “East,” and if so, how badly was Mr. Dixon injured… i.e., should plans for mass rioting begin?

But there are plenty of other TWD mysteries lingering from throughout Season 6, and with the finale — “Last Day on Earth” — kicked up to 90 minutes, here’s hoping the majority of them will be answered before the Alexandrians and their new friends and foes ride off into the primetime sunset until next fall.

Who will be the first victim of Negan and Lucille?
Daryl? Glenn, as in the comics? Abraham? Michonne? Carl?! The stakes are high and Negan’s (and Lucille’s) entrance to the series is highly anticipated, so whoever his first victim is, and no matter how prepared you think you are for it to play out, it promises to be shocking and brutal and heartbreaking.

What will Carl do with Negan’s gun?
Well, what we assume is Negan’s gun. It was in the pantry, with the other weapons Rick and the gang took when they raided The Saviors’ homebase in “Not Tomorrow Yet.” It has a wooden handle that features a carving of a baseball bat with what appears to be wire — barbed-wire — wrapped around it, so it’s almost certainly Negan’s property. Will Negan find out Carl has his gun? Will Carl use the gun against The Saviors… even Negan himself? The Walking Dead prop master, John Sanders, told Yahoo TV the etching on the gun was based on a drawing sketched out by showrunner Scott Gimple, and that, while it may have been on screen for just a few second in “East,” its importance in the story looms much larger.

“I think that little carving is well-anticipated, that’s for sure,” Sanders says. “It’s so amazing to have so many people interacting to make something, which seems like almost nothing, but… [it] leads to something so big for everybody that’s involved. We went and got a specific type of wooden handle; we got a specific kind of etching piece to put on it; we put it on both sides to make sure it was facing the right direction [on camera]. There are all these tiny details, which I love… You ask me questions about things that maybe had four seconds of screen time, but people love that stuff and they know where that could be leading. Then you realize that the story is only going to get bigger, and bigger, and bigger.”

What happened to Nicholas’s son?
Hey, Mikey! Remember Mikey, Nicholas’s son, one of the teens Carl met when the gang first landed in Alexandria? He was a friend of Ron and Enid, the one who told Carl he and his friends mostly liked to hang out and listen to music. So, what happened to him? Presumably someone told him what happened to his dad, but we never saw his reaction. Wouldn’t Ron, even during his busiest hating on Carl and Rick days, have comforted his friend? Wouldn’t Enid? There is a Michael listed on the Alexandria memory wall, but no Mikey… so, if he is still alive, where is he???

Did Negan witness Daryl killing that group of motorcycle-riding Saviors in the midseason premiere?
It may be a major Easter egg, or it may have been a production boo boo, but a very alert TWD fan spotted a car far in the background of the scene in the midseason premiere where Daryl unleashes the RPG on the motorcycle-riding Saviors. Fan speculation is that the car may have been driven by Negan, which has further fed the theory that Daryl is the one who meets Negan’s vengeance-fueled bat in the season finale. What say you: was that car a clever hint at what’s to come, or a rare detail d’oh by TWD production staff?

Will Carol and Morgan reunite with their friends?
Carol fled Alexandria because she didn’t want to have to kill the living anymore; she and Morgan are now on the same page with that philosophy. And Morgan’s words to Rick — when they separate in “East,” about not coming to look for him if she doesn’t come back to Alexandria — felt like a goodbye. Maybe Carol and Morgan survive the finale, but don’t rejoin their friends. Maybe one, or both, take up permanent residence at Eastman’s cabin in the woods. Everything’s a circle, everything returns, as Morgan himself said… perhaps he’s finally realized that the major reason Eastman was able to live out the “all life is precious” philosophy is because he was living alone, with only himself to worry about. Maybe Morgan goes off into the woods to live, with the open-ended chance to pop into Rick’s life again in the future, and maybe Carol takes a sabbatical there, too?

What is Enid’s secret?
She’s been skulking around town, acting all guilty, since Season 5. But in “JSS,” which also shed light on her backstory with her parents, Enid told Carl she was leaving town, while the Wolves were attacking. He was too preoccupied to really hear what she was saying, but she told him, “They’re just people. This place is too big to protect. There are too many blindspots. That’s how we were able to…” To what? And who is the “we” she is referring to? Once and for all, is/was Enid a member of the Wolf pack? To what extent? Did she help them scope out Alexandria with the intention of attacking and killing the townspeople? And if so, will she admit her secret to Carl, or her new pal Maggie?

Will Maggie and her baby survive?
Because of what happens with Negan and Glenn in the comics, the focus has been on whether or not Mr. Rhee will survive “Last Day on Earth,” but when we last saw Maggie in “East,” she was suffering from some serious stomach pain. Will she and the baby be okay? Will she head off to The Hilltop to see Dr. Harlan? And could the trip there be just the opportunity Negan needs to make his intentions known to Rick’s group?

Are all the Wolves dead?
We know the one who ultimately sacrificed himself to save Denise is a goner. And we know those Wolves who Rick killed through the RV walls are most definitely dead. But did any of the others survive? Are they still in the area, ready to attack again? And if Enid was working with them, is she still in touch with any surviving Wolves?

What happened to Honey, the woman who was with Dwight when they met and ripped off Daryl?
Dwight has reemerged with half a burnt face, and he’s apparently re-aligned with The Saviors. Is Honey still alive? If so, what was her punishment for running away from Negan and company?

Who is Wade, the guy who came looking for Dwight, Honey and Tina in the woods?
He’s the guy — whose face we didn’t see — who led the search party for Dwight, Honey, and Tina in “Always Accountable,”, and told them they were going to have to pay for the supplies they took, the gas they used, the time of the men in the search party when they left The Saviors. Wade must be a Negan underling, but how far up the chain is he, and will we meet him again? Or is he among the Saviors Rick and the others killed at The Saviors compound?

Will the lone surviving truck Savior from “East” catch up with Carol?
His name is Roman, and he’s the only survivor from the truck full of Saviors men Carol singlehandedly wiped out in “East.” He picked up her rosary beads and staggered into the woods after Rick and Morgan followed what they assumed was a trail of Carol’s blood. Will Roman find Carol? Before Morgan does?

Was the armored man in “East” a member of The Saviors, as Rick suspected, or a member of The Kingdom?
Because of the handmade weapon Rick and Morgan found when they ran into the armored man at the farm full of walkers, Rick assumed Armored Guy was a member of The Saviors, who’d taken such weapons from The Hilltop. But — comic book spoiler comingTWD comics introduce a group of survivors who live at an old high school building surrounded by school buses and metal walls. The camp is known as The Kingdom, and its members wear DIY armor and eventually become allies of Alexandria and The Hilltop to take on Negan and The Saviors. The Kingdom is led by a colorful man known as Ezekiel, a former zookeeper whose companion is a pet tiger named Shiva. Ezekiel also sports a shock of white, George Clinton-esque dreadlocks, which means Eugene will most definitely respect his hair game if the two ever meet.
