'The Walking Dead': Josh McDermitt Plays Name that Mullet and Stump the Star

There are a lot of fan favorites on AMC’s The Walking Dead, which premieres its sixth season Sunday. If Josh McDermitt’s Eugene isn’t already one of yours, he will be after you watch the games the actor played when he visited Yahoo TV earlier this week.

In the video above, we challenge McDermitt to name celebrity mullets. Below, he tries to answer Walking Dead trivia questions submitted by fans. Did they manage to stump the star? Multiple times, which is when the fun really begins.

As for show spoilers, McDermitt wasn’t about to reveal any of those. “We saw Eugene at the end of last season starting to become the hero — he saved Tara, he saved Glenn, unfortunately he couldn’t save Noah. He certainly enjoys the safety behind the walls. It’s something he was searching for along his entire journey during the apocalypse. But we know that these walls aren’t exactly the strongest walls,” he says. “We saw that at the end of the season — someone left the gate open and Walkers started getting in. I would certainly hope that Eugene is the type of guy that’s gonna step up, that he’s going to be the hero again. But it’s The Walking Dead. We never know what’s gonna happen.”

We can confirm that Eugene’s mullet gets a fair amount of attention in the premiere, as it should. It’s also eye-catching on the street. “Right now it’s really tough to have the mullet because you can’t get away from it,” he says. “It used to be that we put extensions in and then you can pull them out, and I’d throw a hat on and people wouldn’t know it’s me. Now it doesn’t matter what kind of disguise I wear, people are looking at me — whether they know who I am or not. They kinda give me a weird eye, like, ‘Who’s this idiot?’ And if they know — which half the world watches The Walking Dead — they of course come up, and it’s always a good time to meet the fans, and take pictures, and hug them, and steal their wallet and stuff like that. It’s something that I just embrace. I didn’t think that I’d ever have a mullet in my lifetime, and I’m kinda excited to have one now.”

With so many Walkers in the show, does he have friends asking him to get them a shot at playing one? “Every one of my friends — in fact, people who aren’t my friends — are always asking, ‘Can I be a Walker? Can I be a Walker?’ The thing you need is a really long neck, because you have to look emaciated. So when I tell one of my friends, ‘Yeah, you would be really good as a Walker because you need a long neck and to look emaciated,’ they get a little offended. They’re like, ‘Wait, I look like I’m about to die?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, but you’d be great on it.’ I’m starting to ruin my friendships, as much as I can actually,” he jokes. “Because then it’s great: I don’t have to worry about trying to get my friends on the show, I can just worry about my job.”

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
